Buy a bumper bracket and forget about it. In the event that is does decide to grow legs, that's where your insurance policy takes over...In reality the chances of someone stealing it are slim to none IMHO.

My TT has 2 "racks" on the back bumper...and the spare tire is cable locked to one of these. was there when we bought it...not sure what these racks are really for...

Mine is mounted on the bumper. I used to keep it in the rear storage, but it took up too much room.

yardmaster,
Not positive, but from the pics I would have to guess that your racks were meant for bicycles. The bike tires drop down into the slots and are then strapped down.
Kind of looks like the rack assembly may have been pushed closer together, or maybe they were small bikes. And usually, there is a "stand-up" tube that is used in supporting the bicycles with another strap.
BTW...that spare is putting a lot of weight on your rack when mounted as it is, and there is a lot of stress from the bouncing effect when hanging out there like that. Take it from one who knows from experience! I lost two bikes, rack, and all when the whipping motion of my TT caused the rack to break!!!
Good luck!

Maybe I'm luck with lots of storage space, but I like to keep mine stored inside the back storage bay - keeps the sun and ozone off the thing - and keeps the back of the trailer nicer looking!

The way I've seen most spares attached to the rear bumpers of TTs, the spare is very close to the bumper, so the weight is close to being right over the bumper. Most TT bumpers should have no problem with the spare mounted on them, but you may want to have an experienced TT garage take a look at the bumper first.

The problem with a lot of bike racks that use receiver hitches, is that the weight is hanging way out, which amplifies the bouncing effect when going over bumps, which in turn amplifies the effect of the weight on the bumper. You can prevent damage with extra supports welded to the bumper and frame, which not a lot of people do.

Last season we stored the spare under our bed. I bought a bumper mount kit at CW and installed it over the weekend.
