BenK wrote: Boycott one brand for a whole month, but you can still buy from another brand. I think a better approach is to consistently buy gas where the price is less. I have a UNOCAL station near my house that is consistently 10 cents per gallon lower than the Chevron and Shell stations 1 block away. I'll keep bypassing the higher-priced stations and go to the UNOCAL guy.
If everyone bypassed those stations and went to the UNOCAL guy, the other ones would have to lower prices.
But most people won't do it. I was out on an errand yesterday and filled up at an ARCO station that was 15 cents per gallon less than the average price in the area. After filling up, I drove 2 blocks and saw people buying gas at the higher price at a Chevron and a UNOCAL station.
Gas is pretty much a commodity. I can see people wanting to put brand-name gas in their tanks--but why not frequent those that have it for a lower price?

Don't remember exactly but a few years back the Government gave the big Trucking companys the option to put a fuel sur-charge on all loads delivered. I'm sure you remember when the Truck companys would run slower and cause traffic jams etc. Well you don't even hear the large companys complaining, its just the independent Truck owners. This is just a way to make America pay more, all country's have complained for years. Now they got us, if all countrys fuel had increased like ours some would be paying $8.00 dollars or more per gal. We need to go after our own oil, liberals stopped us from drilling and building more refineries. No new one's build in over 30 yrs. So we will keep on paying. You had better write your congressman now, and if he/she don't do whats right vote him/her out of office. Remember the Dems said they would bring fuel down if elected to take over congress. We are paying more than double what fuel was when they took over. GBY.....

Americans. Sheesh. Always looking for a magic solution to our problems that costs us nothing and requires no behavioral change of us. Good luck with that.

Unocal got out of the retail oil business several years ago. You're probably writing about a 76 station, and that giant ConocoPhillips.
There are only two things to do...stop electing politicians that accept campaign money from the oil industry, and use much less fuel.
I'm free of prostate cancer for 5 years now.
All men over age 50 should get an annual PSA blood test. Mine had a low reading, but the yearly jump was significant. The biopsy showed cancer just entering the aggressive stage. Dr. Hackenslash removed it.

Boycot Congress. They are the ones not allowing any oil exploration here, set all the regulations, mandate stupid things that cost everyone. Ethenol mandate is a good example of things not done right.

Ride a bike to work like I did for over 20 straight years and Exxon would be a much smaller company quick but Americans will never get off their fat butts and do that. I see Hummer H2's with only one person in them everyday on the roads and the oil companies love them.

As others have said, many gas stations are independently owned. They have no control over what Big Oil charges them to put gas in the tanks in the ground.
I know a fella who runs his own gas station. In order just to get people in his gas station, he has to charge what the other stations are charging, and sometimes that means charging less than what he paid per gallon for a particular load.
The other day he said he has to come up with $15,000 to pay big oil for a previous load. He says there's times when he's short and it comes from his pocket. He's complaing just as loud as we are that it is more and more difficult to fill his car and take the family anywhere.
Boycotting these guys is going hurt them long before it hurts Big Oil.
As others have said, buy stock in Big Oil. That, at this particular time is THE reason a barrel of crude is so expensive. There is no shortage of crude, OPEC has not tightened the reigns, and we have not yet hit our peak when it comes to getting crude out of the ground.
Enjoy,

"What can the people do about it (oil)? Frankly, IMHO! Nothing. Demand for oil in the US is a fraction of what the total world demand is for oil. Tell ya what, you get the Chinese and the rest of the Asian countries and the world to boycott the oil companies and I'll go along with it.
