Our first RV is on order with 26" LCD TV and Samsung DVD player. While ordering some DVDs to keep us occupied when without cable, I noticed one DVD set in particular (set of Taxi episodes from ~ 1980) comes in "Pan & Scan" format with 1.33:1 aspect ratio. Here
After reading, I believe this has something to do with cropping off widescreen images to fit a regular TV set with 4:3 (same as 1.33:1) aspect ratio. My question: How will this "Pan & Scan" DVD appear on my TV? I don't want to lose (crop off) a major part of the picture.
Thanks!

As MrWizzard said. if you play a Pan & Scan on a Hi-Def tv one of the options is "Pillar Box they put a black "Pillar" on either side of the standard 4x3 rectangle.
Many such DVD's however if you turn them over have a "Widescreen" version Now if you play that on a standard TV it should letter box (Bars top and bottom) but if you play it on an HD tv or monitor .... What you get is what you got Widescreen
Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business

These new wide screen TV's are a joke. You have to buy a 42" wide screen to get the same viewable undistorted picture that you got on a 27" standard TV. I find it really funny that people are so concerned about having a high def TV that they are willing to stretch and distort the majority of programming they watch to see the occasional program that actually fills the whole screen they paid for.

Hmmm... Don't have that problem with mine. Normal SD broadcast is shown 4:3 aspect ratio, HD is shown full screen. No problems, and HD is awesome! At least until you get used to it (spoiled).

So what setting do you use to watch SD broadcast that you don't have that problem ? If you use the 4:3 setting you must have the black side bars with a small picture in the center of the screen ?

I have a 62" widescreen dlp tv, so the small picture in the middle is still pretty big.
got the tv as a display clearance, cost $900, replaced a 32" crt sony that cost more when I bought it new.
Now watching widescreen DVD's with an upconverting dvd player is fantastic. and most of my local channels, fox, abc, ect have an HD channel that the tv picks up, so for me channel 2 is SD in the letter box, and channel 2-1 is foxes HD channel, most the shows are widescreen including the local news, which is broadcast in HD. so, you see many programs are in HD and in the future most will be.

you are right with the pillars on ea side you dont get the full 42' wide screen unless you force it and its then distorted but very soon much more programming will be in 16:9 format I have high def service from the cable co and there is plenty of prime time TV in wide screen format and Blueray movies are fantastic ( even the upconverted std 480p dvd's are great). most of my tv watching is DVD movies anyway ( but then I get bars at the top and bottom because Movies are filmed in a wider format than 16:9 )

SD and HD screens are optimized for a particular type of image format. Anything other than that particular image format is a compromise and won't be ideal.
For example, watch a widescreen-format movie on that 27-inch TV and you'll really have to squint to see any detail.
But this isn't a good way to compare...You really can't compare diagonal measurements between SD and HD. A square and a rectangle = apples to oranges. The numbers are for comparison among same-format screens.

Ya, black bars on the sides when viewing SD. No big deal, similar to viewing letterbox movies on the old 4:3 TV. ABC, NBC, and CBS are mostly in HD anymore. Unfortunately the local FOX is not in HD on Dish Network, as was promised when I signed my contract. No Seahawks HD, may have to go with Direct.
