I built my own satellite tripod out of a transit tripod. It is very stable in the wind and is also easy to level, which is critacal to quickly finding the satellite when setting up. Total cost was something like 80 dollars. The antenna I got on freecycle.com

Here is mine:

I just saw this one on Ebay. Great price. I think I paid $60.00 for the transit tripod alone.

Just called up Directv to order a disaster readiness kit. I am having my first Directv satellite installed on my house on August 25th, so I thought a recovery kit would be nice.

Well, I was told by one of Directv sales folks this kit was only for disasters, like Katrina, and are not available. I mentioned how other people were able to order kits, so this gal checked with some else.

Well, she came back and told me I would not be able to order kit. So I guess I will have to go to E-bay, or the satellite shop to order my kit.

To say least, I was disappointed in hearing this.....

I just logged into my Directv account and can order (online) the disaster recovery kit with no problem. I never call a human there unless it is absolutely necessary. I bought by Dis. Kit online from Directv about 6 mos. ago.

I pick up a dish with tripod setup on craigslist for $20. A 4x4 post level works great for getting it vertical and cheap $6 compass from wally world. I just get her level and use tent stakes though the bolt holes in the tripod. never had any problems yet. The emergency kit from DTV I found the cheapest if you can't find one through craigslist of the paper. There is not much that can go wrong with a used one except the lnb and worst case they are $20-30.
