We're spending a week in Washington, (Mossyrock, Riffe lake) then traveling home We're thinking about taking 5 to 26 to 97...then into Oregon
suggestions for places to stop... We're open to boondocking and aren't in any real hurry.

If you go anywhere near Birney falls(East of Redding) It may not be one of the larger falls but is beautiful. Also south of Bend you have some interesting places that had volcanic activity.

You could go north on I-5 about 6 miles and take the highway west through Pe Ell and see flood damage. Then go on down to Raymond and head south on 101 across the Astoria bridge (nice maritime museum there) the south on Oregon coast which is a pretty drive.

If you go to Anacortes, visit Fort Clatsop, where Lewis and Clark wintered. then out to the Park at the end of the Columbia river. GREAT spot! The next day, head south to Cannon Beach, and then on down to Boiler Bay. Just keep on truckin', as it's all beautiful out there.

Klamath falls, has to be something around with all that water.
Crater lake, awesome.
Newberry National Volcanic Monument a 500 square mile caldera in Deschutes national forest? They even have a one mile long lava tube, take a fresh flashlight

I think you would love this, and less people than crater lake and there are actually two lakes up top.
And, I don't know, maybe Mt. Hood or Mt. St. Helens?

Do you need a tour guide? Sounds like a great trip, have fun.
