I've been researching transmission coolers this week. I have an '07 Silverado V8, 4.8L with 3.23 gear ratio and a towing package. My dealer (chevy dealer) told me to get a transmission cooler to tow my new '08 Jayco JayFlight 28BHS. I took it out last weekend and the transmission got up to 192 running in 2nd at about 3500-3700 rpm going straight into a 25 mph headwind (thanks to all of you who responded with help in my "need input" thread).

Anyway, I go to see how much room I have for a cooler, and see this:

(looking down at radiator)

It sure looks like a transmission cooler to me, but then I'm new at this. I would think that my Chevy salesman would know whether or not I had one.

So my questions is simple...is this a transmission cooler?

Also...would it be of any benefit for me to either add another one or replace this one with a bigger one?

I sure wouldn't recommend asking any salesman any tech question as most aren't that experienced in the tech field. BUT your dealers service tech can give you that info. It looks like a auto tranny cooler but without tracing the fluid line out of the tranny its a guess unless another owner/poster has one. I would be surprised that a 1500 4.8 engine and a 3.23 axle would have a cooler that big. A bigger cooler will help with towing duties on keeping tranny temps down especially for a 3.23 geared tow vehicle.

Sure looks like it. Mine is located just left of the rad and about 2 inches in front of it. I would bet that is it. And as far as dealers, does he even know what a tranny cooler is?

Cheers.

Could also be an eng oil cooler but it looks like a trans cooler.
You could crawl under the rig and see if the lines go back to the tranny.
BTW, I agree with Jim, never ask a salesman tech questions.

The fluid is probably also cooled by the radiator. So one line will go to the radiator and the other to the transmission. Yep I think you have a fine transmission cooler there and you should have no worries. Although you may want to clean the bugs off.

It could be your A/C condensor. Would not know for sure unless you follow the lines.

You may see your lines go into the side of the radiator, then into the trans cooler...
