My wife and I want to see the Atlantic Ocean from either North or South Carolina. We have a 32 foot motorhome but we do not have a tow. IS there any good camp grounds near the ocean that you can suggest? Or, maybe just a great campground we should not miss? Thanks ahead of time for your time.

I would suggest you look up S.C. state park campgrounds. There are a number of them from Myrtle Beach at the northern end, to Edisto Beach at the southern end. All are on the ocean, nice campgrounds at a reasonable price, and well maintained. We have stayed at all of them and never been disappointed. They can be booked thru Reserve America and time is running short to make reservations.
Hope you have a great trip

The best ocean front state park in SC is called Hunting Island SP, outside of Beaufort, SC. The campground is right on the ocean, with sites so close you can hear and see the waves. The others at in Myrtle Beach, Huntington Beach (south of Myrtle Beach) and Edisto Beach. Not sure about Edisto, but the campgrounds at Myrtle Beach SP and Huntington Beach are NOT oceanfront. Don't know when you are planning your trip, but if it's for the summer you might have a hard time getting ressies in these parks. There are a number of privately owned, mammouth sized campgrounds on the ocean front in Myrtle Beach. They are loud, crowded, and crazy, but you could probably get a cramped ocean front site in any one of them (the 'big three' are Pirateland, Ocean Lakes and Lakewood). Of these, I think Pirateland may have the 'bigger' sites, although they are close together.

I agree, Hunting island is beautiful. It's right on the ocean. It is a little off the beaten track though. It's quite a haul back to a store or restaurant. Hilton head motorcoach resort is a short bike ride from a beautiful beach and very close to shops and restaurants. Depends on what you want.

Myrtle Beach SP and Huntington Beach SP are very close together. they are near the City of Myrtle Beach and, more importantly, close to Murrell's Inlet. (Better known as "restaurant row.) Of the two I picked Myrtle Beach SP. It is less than 300 yards to the beach, you can hear the surf on most nights. Very protected sites in the "Piney Woods". Has a nice fishing pier.

Huntington Beach sites are mostly in the open, flat field. Very little protection, or shade. About the same distance to the beach. BUT, the park is beautiful for day trips. The marsh is beautiful. The "castle" of Atalaya is really neat. We find more shells and sand dollars on the beach there.

OK Just my $.02 worth.

Check out Holiday Trav-L-Park Resort in Emerald Isle, NC. Ocean front CG with lots to do for the kids. It's on the South end of the island. We went over Memorial Day weekend and had a blast.

All of the SC State parks previously mentioned are great. Check right now, they fill up fast as they are not very large campgrounds. Another option if you have bikes, is Edisto Island State park's Live Oak Loop. It is about a half mile or so from the beach on the marsh, therefore doesn't fill up as fast.

With a motorhome, you may want to go to Hilton Head. It is MH only. Beautiful surroundings, great seafood, & golf.

I agree with Aikensbest. SC state beach campgrounds are the best.
Have reservations at Hunting Island again for Fourth of July.

Just came back from Huntington Beach State Park. Although many of the campsites are open, go to google earth and check the back row. These were really nice shaded sites.

If in the Myrtle Beach area, check out Brookgreen Gardens right across from HBSP.

Or if you want to see the beach almost the way it used to be pre-development, there's the Outer Banks of NC... a long national park, just a road flanked by dunes and the ocean on one side, sound waters on the other, with a few towns & mostly samd and surf and dune grass. A few NP CG's without hook-ups but with generous sites, and a few private CG's that have maybe smaller spaces but with hook-ups.

I've always gone in cooler weather and stayed in the NP CG's at Oregon Inlet / Bodie Island, or Frisco Woods / Cape Hatteras. At Bodie Island, the outer row of RV sites is less than 100 yards thru the dunes to the surf, which you can usually hear.
