I keep a gray hose for the tank flush. I try to be careful, even though there are anti-back flush. It's just not worth the chance of getting us sick.

I use 2 hoses. But the sani-flush hose is only connected when I flush the black tank. There is no need to connect it until you are going to use it. I also use the flushing hose to wash out the sewer hose--Don't ever use my white fresh water hose for any of this.

On a related issue. Does anyone test the campground water before using it? It used to be a big issue when hiking, and everyone carried these little test kits around.
I would not be too worried in an urban site (city water), but some of the rural ones are on a local well and the pipes have been there a long time.

Fun is that stuff that happens in between mistakes.

I use an anti-back valve, like the ones that are on a lot of RV water hook-up's at the parks. Also I use a separate hose.

I see people all the time using their white fresh water hose to flush....Yuck!

This is just a question, OK?
Where would any pressure come from on the sani-flush to cause it to enter the pressurized fresh water hose. Then with the anti-siphon attachment and a shutoff how would it be possible to have any contamination problem?

I can see not leaving a permanent connection between the sani and the fresh water...but I use a short jumper just off my city water to the sani inlet when I want to flush.

I only do it when the black tank has been dumped so I agree with those who say where would the siphon occur....and there is positive flow and pressure away from the fresh virtually the whole time the hose is hooked up.

Been doing it this way for years....but would change if someone could really convince me it is dangerously unsanitary.

Gravity is irrelevant. Changes in pressure can cause "backflow". On ships we have Backflow preventers to avoid this very thing. Just a fancy one way non-return valve. However, is it all worth it just to avoid swapping a hose over? If you are worried about the durability of the fittings on the trailer, just swap the hoses at the Campground end, and leave the two connected at the trailer.

I took my rig to an RV dump just this weekend and used our Sani-flush system. When I disconnected my hose (the host from the rv dump), water back-flowed out of the sani-flush connection. While this water was clear, there is no doubt in my mind that this was contaminated water. I would definitely use a seperate hose.

In theory, that large gush of water that comes out is from the clean side of the back flow preventer but I too feel that there is a possibility of contamination, however slight. that is why I always keep my water under pressure when unhooking.
