Heading to June Lake Ca, in july. Driving from San Diego, so going to stop for the night on trip up. Has anyone stayed overnight at the rest area outside of Independence? Anyone stayed anywere else near Lone Pine, Independence, etc? thank Roger
To the west of Lone Pine, along Movie Trail road, there is a lot of dry camping places, but I don't think I would want to pull into there at 2 hours past dark. If you where arriving in the daytime, it would be a great place to check out. Lot of boondocking places, only about 5 miles west of town, where the traffic signal is located.
There is also a couple of campgrounds, but it will usually fill up on Friday afternoons. One is Lone Pine and is 7 miles west of Highway 395, on Whitney Portal road, to the left just before the road climbs up to Mt. Whitney Portal.
Another place I might pick if I just wanted to camp for 1 night might be Diaz Lake where they have 200 sites. 760-876-5656. Boulder Creek RV resort is listed in my old TL camping guide as a good place, 760-876-4243.
Have stayed at both Diaz Lake and Boulder Creek RV park.....Boulder Creek is very nice, and friendly staff..about $30 per night. Diaz Lake has no hookups, but is also nice for an over night stay. Both just south of Lone Pine on HWY 395.
Boulder Creek if you need hookups, but choose a campsite well away from the 395. There are many NF campgrounds all around Independence and Lone Pine. Gray's Meadows is on a small trout stream not far up the road to Onion Valley and has a wonderful view out over the valley. There was a fire nearby two years ago, so you might inquire in the town. Another one off the same road, Oak Creek, is similar, but may have burned.

You can make the trip to June Lake in one day - not a bad drive at all. I am assuming you are going to take the 15N to the 395? The best place to stop is Boulder Creek IMHO. Great place with a pool and hot tub. Any place further north on the 395 is less than an hour or so from June Lake.
We won't be leaving til late afternoon, and have 3 kids(two being very young) so straight through would be too long of a tow. Was thinking about Boulder Creek, but wouldn't need hook up for just one night. Maybe a good thing, wouldn't have to take water? thanks Roger

Plus, you can get water there free with your stay, therefore not have to haul water up an over Cajon Pass.

With all due respect, RRC SP is many miles out of the way. I-15 to 395 all the way up is much shorter than cutting over to Hwy 14 via 58.

thanks, found Tuttle Creek but on dirt road not sure about that at night?
Yes, Tuttle Creek is a dirt road....I wouldn't recommend it at night. Stick with Boulder Creek RV park.... a little pricey, but easy to find and park. I wouldn't stay at Lake Diaz on a bet!
If you can make it to Bishop, there are several campgrounds (rv parks) there...one old, but nice, and one new. There is also Independance and Big Pine. Both have places to stay.
