Here's a thought...I live near Richmond Va and I am only 20 miles from 2 Va state parks. I camp with 2 dogs ($10.00) a site with Electric is $24.00 a day. I can drive to Kerr SRA (90 miles), get a site for three days ($14.00/day senior) on the water and still come out cheaper then 3 days at Va state parks. I think NC state parks are great!

How do we get the reservation system fixed? Hate to drive 2+ hours to Jordan lake and not have a site? Guess I will need to start writing more letters to the politicians in Raleigh!

I live 20 minutes, in rural Chatham county opposite Raleigh, from Jordan Lake, worked there during the summers for 2 years, and was camping with the cub scouts 2 weeks ago.

I have never had a problem getting a site. You might not be able to get one right on the water but you can usually get a site.

It is amazing how much information can be shared on this site. You guys really gave us loads of information. I have to agree with most of you that NC could definitely improve their system. At least they do have some w/e sites around, but like you said, if you can't reserve a spot how will that help? Thanks and keep posting!

Perhaps you should shift your focus to COE CGs and Georgia State Parks. I wouldn't waste my time trying to figure out how to make the NC park system work for me unless I had the ability to go mid-week or was willing to reserve for at least 7 nights. There are too many other great places to stay that are probably as close to you (hopefully).

For example - Lake Hartwell has several COE CGs - some on the SC side and the rest on the GA side. We've been to Twin Lakes near Clemson, SC - great place. I think there are 8 or 9 total CGs on this lake.

Bandits Roost COE in NC gets good marks -- Wilksboro, NC

And Georgia State Parks and the COE CGs on Lake Lanier or Lake Altoona -- the list goes on and on. We just left Old Federal COE CG in Flowery Branch, GA on Lake Lanier - it was fabulous.

When you get done with the SC, GA and NC COEs move into South VA -- Goose Point COE in Bassett, VA and North Bend COE in Boynton, VA.

Gee, I find this topic surprising. With all the beautiful mountains in NC, I just assumed we would be able to find water/electric campgrounds and 2-day reservations.

We went tent camping decades ago in the Smokies and Blue Ridge -- but I've not been since I was a kid.

Thanks for the info! Good to know.

Lucy, I agree. We have tried almost all of the parks you list outside of NC and have enjoyed all of them. It is just disappointing that we cannot share the wonderful experience of some of the NC parks due to our schedule not fitting in with their restrictions.

Yea I know. But since we cannot cure all the ills here, I thought it might be beneficial to give the OP some alternatives and move on. Be glad you are not over 5 hours from the surrounding state borders. That's how long it takes us to get out of Florida. There's only so many days I care to camp in the sun and sand, but give me the tall pines and I could stay a lifetime.

A host at a very popular NC forest service cg told me that they were trying to get w/e on all sites. He said the governement estimated it would cost $10,000 per site, and the funding wasn't approved. Neither of us is an utility contractor, but we both thought $10K per site was excessive.
