[quote=Timbo08]I lost my border collie once! Yes she was tethered on both sides of the bed, but she had been lunging at cars as we passed them, if you know collies especially border collies you know they will chase and herd anything and everything, anyway the tether leash tore off from her collar, we had just exited the freeway, (thank heavens) and I'm checking my mirrors and I see my black and white collie rolling on the shoulder of the road. You know that sick feeling you can get in the pit of your stomach when something really bad or frightening happens? I had it.

Your lucky and so was the dog. I see too many people riding around with their dogs either tied to a short 4-5 foot leash or untied and in the back of flatbed's with no sides or standing on their tool boxes.

WOW! so many of us in the same boat! LOL! it's the turbulence thats causing my problem. Trust me, it was a heavy rubbermaid container. Yeah, the heavy drinking DID help me cope with the loss!.

On one of my first trips out with my first 5ver I put a cooler in the bed of the truck. It was almost empty and very light. Being a newbie I did not understand the turbulence in the bed at highway speeds until I heard something banging around behind me. When I looked in the rear view mirror the cooler was floating around on the air currents, banging into the bed rails and banging into the underside of the 5ver pin. Before I could get the trailer stopped the cooler floater up and out of the bed, banged the front of the 5ver and flew out of the truck entirely smashing on the road behind me.
Lesson learned!!! Never carry anything light in the bed again without tying it down

gnarlykaw,

Just wonder if you have a fiver tail gate. I notice a lot more turbulence with the factory gate installed as my losses in the past rival yours. Once lost the lids off 3 coolers (broke off the hinges) and sucked the water out leaving the ice and beverages. Another time the entire cooler lifted out and went under the fiver and caught on the axle with the contents still intact.

Yep.

I have a BakFlip that I fold up leaving just the first section down. Secured with a velcro strap.

When I got my hitch I had a bed pad, one of those made out of 1/2" rubber. I cut it into three sections, front, middle between the hitch rails and one behind the hitch. I have a std tailgate. On the first trip I heard a thump from back there. The rear pad lifted out and went on the road. I was lucky it didn't tear anything off the underside of the trailer.

Everything under the remaining portion of the cover stays put, but, it is tied down.

Don't make light of this issue...

I ride a motorcycle and ANYTHING coming off the bed of a truck can cause me serious harm !
