We are thinking about taking a long trip next spring mainly to visit the area around Mt Rushmore and Deadwood in South Dakota--then to Devils Tower and eventually Yellowstone in Wyoming.
I have sent for some brochures, but would welcome any suggestions for things "Not-To-Miss" and also for any recommended RV Parks. I like to plan ahead, so I would really appreciate any input. It's just my hubby and me and our little dog.
Thanks.

Strongly recommend you see Custer State park and tour the Black Hills for a few days. Crazy Horse, Needles Highway, Iron Mountain Road, Game Loop Road, Rushmore and Keystone, Spearfish Canyon.
Drive the (gravel) Lower French Creek Road from the Stockade at Stockade Lake across to the entrance to Game Loop and Blue Bell area to see tons of wildlife, some old mine sites and really neat scenery.

Yellowstone gets crowded after the kids get out of school in mid-June. If you can get there before that you will have much less trouble getting campsites and driving around the Park, parking at pullouts, etc. The only CG inside Yellowstone with full hookups is Fishing Bridge. There are several good private CGs in West Yellowstone with full hookups. Grizzly RV gets good reviews. A week is not too long a time to spend at Yellowstone. It's a big place and each day is a new experience. Plan for a full day at the Old Faithful area. Lots to do there. Have lunch or dinner at the Old Faithful Inn. Dogs are not allowed on any of the hiking trails of boardwalks in Yellowstone.
After Yellowstone head south the few miles to Grand Teton National Park. IMO the most beautiful mountains in the country. A few days there would be well spent.
We plan to be back there again next Spring too.

Badlands NP is not that far from Mt. Rushmore and worth a visit. Also, next to Badlands is an old Air Force underground missle silo that you can tour. I wanted to do it last time we were there but they only take a few people through at a time and tours are booked up months in advance.

You will be near Little Bighorn Battlefield. Well worth a couple of hours. Cody, Wy is not to be missed. Allow at least one day for the Buffalo Bill Historic Center. Have dinner at the Irma Hotel. Cody has a rodeo every night June - August. Well worth attending.

We stayed at the Devil's Tower KOA and it was great because it was at the base of Devil's Tower...so very close...and convenient...and they play Close Encounters every evening...too funny!
We stayed at the KOA in Mt. Rushmore, too...snaziest place I've seen, but if you're not going to stay put and take advantage of the ammenitites, not sure you'll want to pay the price...more for travelers with kids, IMO...but very nice.
At Yellowstone we stayed at Fishing Bridge...in the park...AWESOME!
Good luck and have fun!!!

Did that last summer. Loved Rafter J outside Custer SD. Don't miss Rushmore at night. Go during the day and do everything you can, then they give you a free return pass. Go back and watch the night ceremony. Hit Custer State Park in morning or evening to see wildlife more active. Jewell Cave a must, take the 1.5 hour tour.
Cody museums a must. We did not plan it in and I regret that.
Stayed in Fishing Bridge. Many will boohoo the place but it met our needs and it was very central. I would stay there again.

Don't know if they still do it or not, but DW and I stopped at the South Dakota visitor center and rented a CD that gave a lot of information about SD. I think they rent it just so that they could get them back. It was surprisingly worth while.
Also I alway recommend a stop at the World's Only Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D. It only takes an hour or two, but it is worth it.
