Sometimes a quick double click on the back button will fix it. Otherwise, use the down arrow next to the back button to select the site you want to return to. Not all browsers are like this however.
If you have windows you can also right click on the mouse and click on "open in new window" on the drop down menu. Thus preserving your original page.
