We're traveling down the Freeway today and a car pulls up and says a bar is hanging loose on the right side.
Pulled over and take a look and sure enough the 1400# torsion bar had slid over top of the L-Pin and was sticking straight out the side of the hitch.

Luckily we carried a Equalizer "Lost Pin Survival Kit".
Spare Kit

Was able to compare the old L-pin with the new one and noticed right off the old one was bent out a little. The new one has a sharp 90° angle to it.

Just a heads up for all you Equalizer users.

BTW, the hitch is only 2 years old and the other side L-Pin shows it's been bent a little also. Buying 2 more kits so I'll have a spare.

Happy trails,

What is your tongue weight? All the bar tension is pushing DOWN, so it is hard to see how bar could go UP over pin. Not saying it didn't happen, but it sure must have been quite a bump for bar to go up that hard, unless the tongue weight is WAY too light, in which case I can see it. Note tongue weight should be about 13% of fully loaded TT ACTUAL fully loaded weight.

I didn't realize that they had those kits. That spare kit is a must have. I think I'm going to order two. Thanks for info.

Someone installed the pin wrong and your hitch isn't torqued properly if the bar was flopping around.... if your truly talking about a equalizer brand hitch..... or are you talking about a generic wd hitch?

can you post a picture of the bent L pin?

Are you sure your L-brackets aren't too far back? The only time I've heard of this happening is when these brackets are beyond the 32" mark. They end up being pulled out from under the pin.

Because of the location of my propane tanks, I had to move my L-brackets forward of the optimal 32" mark. Still work well, but no fear of spring bars pulling out from under the L-pin.

Even if my pins were bent, no way for the bar to hop off my L-bracket. The L-pin would have to shear before the bar could lift off the L-bracket. It's really well captured.

Sounds to me like something may be out of adjustment. Mine have so much pressure on the L brackets I don't see how they would even come loose.

After going to a Ace hardware and getting extra clips and pins I saw the spare kit and ordered it for the rest. It sounds like there wasn't enough weight on the bar for it to come loose while traveling. Make sure your L bracket did move back.
