I agree. I've used Windows steadily since 3.0. There was good and bad - 3.0 bad... 3.1 good. ME bad... XP good. My Mom has Vista on her laptop and it works fine. I'm against switching because for me a PC is a tool for work and I have no reason to change. I need good communications capabilities, a good editor, and different emulators to talk to other computers. Windows XP give me that and it has been rock solid for years with no security issues that have affected me. I spend a full day working on the damn thing, I don't play much on it off-hours.

People either hate or love VISTA. {snip} I just don't understand the problems people have/had with VISTA as everything I have (software and hardware) works fine with VISTA, even MS Office 97 that some say won't work with VISTA. Part of what you say is the exact problem. MOST, not all, older hardware won't work with Vista and SOME, but not all, older software will work with Vista.
Basically, for me, why should I have to purchase a new computer (this one is only two years old) just to run a new OS, especially with a newer OS just on the horizon in 2-3 years?

Well... DUH!!!!!! Most people who buy vehicles buy them with seats and tires installed too.
You can't get something deleted if it is needed for the thing to work.
Gee I just bought a new Dell desktop and specifically ordered one with XP on it.

bumpy Bumpy, I said most not all. BTW... did you have to pay extra for XP?
My point was that you can't delete the OS and just order a computer. The manufacturers want to put an OS on it for you and the majority of time it is the latest version.

no, had I wanted to buy one at the store, best buy for example, I would have had to do that which is why I ordered mine from Dell. The HP site would not give me XP unless I went to the small business site.

I specifically ordered my Dell laptop with XP. Some programs and hardware won't work with Vista. DW's MLS, AutoCAD, DW's printer and probably others. In my work, we have all kinds of compatibility problems with Office 2007/2003. I don't need another headache.

I had a choice of two almost identical PC's for the same price - one with 1G RAM and XP and the other with 2G and Vista. I went for the XP box. I figured that XP w/1G would work quite nicely for my needs and by the time I wanted to add another memory stick that memory would be cheap. By comparison I do not know how Vista will do on "only" 2G and did not feel like finding out.
Our family probably has PC's that will work for us for another 2 years - I'll assess OS then. Maybe MAC or LINUX if I have not read raves about Vista SP37 R2...

The reason I asked about paying for XP is because our IT person at church just purchased 3 computers and was charged an extra $50 for XP Pro over Vista. He said he had talked to Dell and HP and some other companies and that we their standard response.
That's why I was curious.

well I don't know who he talked to at Dell but I just bought my desktop and had absolutely no problem ordering a XP one. didn't charge extra. now as I say at HP you had to go to the small business site. now XP Pro might have cost more, perhaps that was the reason.
