You can keep your vents open when camping even if it's raining.
You never have to worry about whether you left the vents open. In my case, we were sitting under the awning at the camp site when the wife tells me that she thinks she forgot to close the vents. Not a big deal if it had not been raining for the past 1/2 hour. Now we don't have to worry about that anymore.
You can keep the vents open during the summer, or while traveling in the summer, so your 5er does not get so hot inside.
Another locking solution would be to remove your handle and drill a hole through each side of the handle just off center of the handle about 5/32" drill bit should do it. Next get a old metal wire coat hanger and cut the long straight part of the coat hanger about 1" longer than the square opening of the recessed vent area. Re-install the handle and then insert the wire through the handle. You will have to bow the wire slightly to fit, but that will lock your handle down to prevent unwanted turning during motion.

Thanks for the helpful replies, folks. I already knew about the vent covers but was trying to find another method before going that route, although they're probably the best way to go eventually. For a temporary fix, I like the two ideas presented here about using duct tape (by bearly80) or coat hanger wire (by 5wildcat). Much appreciated....

Well, we went one step more. I installed one Shurflo Silver Comfort Series Fan in our Bathroom, and two Gold Series Comfort Fans, one in our rear Kitchen, and one over the bed in the Loft. I had already had the Maxxi-Vent Covers on. It was so quick and easy to remove the Maxxi-Vent Covers to install the Shurflo Comfort Series fans, and then replace the Maxxi-Vent Covers. One thing is so great about this up-grade, no more darn noisey factory fans for us. Plus you can run the Shurflo Fans with the lids closed, and use them just like regular ceiling fans. When closed, and used as ceiling fans, it greatley aids in moving your A/C air or Furance air around inside of your RV, for a much better even temp. They also have an adjustable speed control, just like a dimmer swith, so you can pick the speed that you want, not a pre-set settings like the Fantastic Fans have on them. I had the chance to see both the Fantastic Fan and the Shurflo Fans work, at a local RV Parts & Repair shop. The choice, was no contest, the Shurflo Comfort Series Fans won hands down. Three Power Fans might be over-kill in only a 24ft 5er, but they make such a big differance, that we now use the A/C less often, as we can create as much air movement as we choose to. And sense we enjoy Dry-Camping/RV'ing, that means a lot less generator running time. As we do enjoy the quiteness of Mother Nature. Happy Camping. Dan & Jill
