Love to see this stuff! Did this a couple a years ago on a P-30 winny....but I went though the front. Good time to rebuild the trans with a new TC. So many thoughts but so little time. Just took mine in for smog. In getting it ready I found the ported vacuum switch for the heat riser went bad and the same for the air cleaner hot/cold air intake......both can be deadly for a 454. Good luck with it and keep us posted on your endeavor.

i am going for rebuild soon, i think im gonna spend a little extra and stroke it, make ie a 488 or 496, supposed to be great for torque, that is what 8.1s are, you might have your engine guy give you a price.

i am lucky, mine comes out of front.

Good luck! My '92 HR is a P-30 also, but says that engine removal is through the driver door (yes, after the seat and steering column is removed...).

Such a familiar site. Tooooooo familiar. Congrats on getting it out. I'm on my second trip. Don't have the everything tweaked yet.
Make absolutely sure that you have a roller cam put in it. Todays oils do not contain as much zinc because it is believed that the zinc ruins the catalytic converter. The cam needs the zinc. If you do not ad zinc - at least during break in, you can count on one hand the number of the number of months before you loose the cam. But the best solution is the roller cam if it didn't have one to begin with.

MN Ben,

I am very curious as to what happened to the piston and what the cause was. Please update us if you find out.

Thanks!

A bottle of E.O.S dumped in on the initial start (2000-2500 RPMs) for 30+ minutes will allow that cam the proper breakin it deserves, In fact you can obtain a few bottles and with every oil change just put in a 1/4 bottle.....

Makes me like my Deere-Oshkosh even more. Drops out through the bottom.

Better than alot of some of the old P-30's. My first p-30/454 job required the front clip to be completely removed. We tried getting out from the bottom with the tranny,to wide. No way out the top, as the doughouse opening was to small. Nothing beats calling a glass shop out so you can pull a engine.
