The reason I ask is because every picture I see...every RV show I visit...slide-out units have all of their "slides" extended--thus showing a lot of room and lots of comfort.

But what about on the road?
When the slides are tucked-in, is it too cramped for passengers?

I've often wondered about this.

I mean, you see slide-outs with sofas & dinettes in place. But when they're tucked in, is everything smashed together inside the gallery/lounge area?

The odd thing is, when the slides are closed, it's just like the old days...before slides...and you can move around, it's just not as spacious.

As far as being too cramped for passengers: How big are the passengers?!?

On most two slide motorhomes there is room to walk down an aisle way with the slides in. The bedroom slide most likely will prevent you from walking around the bed if the bed is part of the slide out. I can't speak for most 3 or 4 slideout motorhomes.

Trailers and 5th wheel RV are a different animal. I can't speak for them either.
I'm sure RVers with the above units will chime in.

It depends on the design of the RV. Most RV's with slide-outs are designed so you can at least get to the bathroom without opening the slides. On our old trailer, you could get to the bathroom easily by going through the rear (master bedroom) door. And in the front, you could get to the couch and the dining room table without opening the slideout.

On our Cougar, you can also get to the bathroom and the master bedroom without opening the slide as well as the couch.

You just have to look at the layout first with the slides closed and then with them open to see what you can and can't access on the road.

Several years ago I was talking to someone who found that they could not get to the bathroom or refrigerator with the slides in. I do not know if that still happens or not. Hopefully companies learned better.

that is exactly why you need to have them bring the slides in when shopping for one. if you can't use the refrig. or bath with the slides in, I wouldn't buy it. that is one thing I noticed about Newmar when I was looking, they didn't hesitate to bring a wall in close to a kitchen counter and greatly restrict passage. Also with their "flush" floor that raised up, there was a 6 inch ridge down the passageway with the slide in that was intolerable.
and if you have slide toppers that automatically go out with the slides, I have had to bring my slide in at night in bad windstorms so I wanted to order my motorhome without them and add the right kind but Winny wouldn't allow any money credit so I just went ahead and got them. Sure enough in Galveston at Delanarva I had to retract my bedroom slide before I moved over to the bay side.

it is not the companies that have to learn, it is the consumer.

We took this into consideration when shopping for our class A. We were surprised how many rigs were not allowing access to bathroom and kitchen area. Ive got 3 kids that need to stretch every once in awhile.

As others have stated, you really need to take a good hard look at the RV with the slides in. We have two slides in our 5er. The head of the bed slides out and a bigger slide in the living area for the dining table and sofa.

We are able to get at the frig and the stove and most of the kitchen cabinets and counter. I can't access the microwave, but that wasn't a deal breaker.

We have full access to the bathroom and we can climb into bed, but can't walk completely around the bed. We can't access the big wardrobe closet with the slides in, but we could put clothes in another hanging closet if we planned a head for a short night's stay.

Our RV came with two matching swivel rocker chairs. The only place to put one of the rockers when the slide was in, was right in front of the door, which was a real pain. So we removed one of the chairs and store it in the stick house. We've never missed it. One chair and the sofa is plenty.

Having access to the frig and the bathroom when the slides are in were the two most important things we considered when we bought our 5er.

It really depends on what type of RV you are looking at. I think most Class A/Class C motorhomes would allow you to move around inside with the slides in. However, I can tell you that on my Jayco getting inside to move around or use the bathroom is extremely difficult with the superslide retracted.

For us it really is a non-issue as the camper is at our seasonal site all season with the slide out. However, if I was purchasing this to travel the countryside it would definitely be a hassle.
