EVDOalex set us up with a Cradlepoint cellular router and broadband service. We are running a server and 2 laptops on the router and get absolutely great service. I am posting this sitting in a State Park in the mountains in Southern Oregon by our campfire while waiting for the gingerbread to cook in the Dutch oven and the coals to burndown for grilling dinner. What more can you ask for!

Set up was quick and very easy.

Sharing A BroadBand Cellular Connection Using Windows XP

On the motor home laptop I access the internet using my cell phone connected via a USB cable to the laptop. The connection is shared through a PCMCIA wireless network adapter card. It could also be shared through a wireless USB network adapter. I used this guide, Making the Wireless Home Network Connection in Windows XP Without a Router It talks about sharing a wired broadband connection at home but it can apply to any cellular internet connection, USB phone, bluetooth phone, card slot or USB. Data encryption is setup after you get the network running. To use it just go through the steps.
Configuring the Host Computer
Configuring a Client Computer
Sharing the Connection
In step 3 of 'sharing the internet connection', after you check the box for 'Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection' there will be a drop down list of all network adapters on the laptop under 'Home network connections'. In the dropdown list you have to select the wireless network adapter you set up under 'Configuring the Host Computer'

The one router I looked at required a 110v AC adapter for power. A 12v power adapter is an available option. Using internet sharing requires nothing else to be plugged in. It is all powered from the laptop.

One of the drawbacks to sharing an internet connection without using a router is that one computer must act as the master computer and must be powered and connected to the internet before any other computer can access the internet. The master laptop is performing the duty of a router. With a stand alone router, any computer connecting to the router can access the internet without any dependency on any other computer.

I see that garym114 is successfully using Internet Connecting sharing with a tethered cell phone connection. Good to know that works!

Is a router even an option in this situation? If so, what router will accept a tethered cell phone?

That sounds great! I'm wondering if you have any external antenna included in your setup? and ... what cell provider are you using?

Chris,
The Cradlepoint routers work with quite a few Sprint/Verizon/ATT cell phones.
You can look for router compatibility chat on EVDOinfo, or PM me with model of phone you have, and I can look it up for you?

chrisguld,

We use the Booster Antenna EVDOalex recommended from 3GStore.com. I can't find a brand name on their website, but it is featured in their reviews section. Perhaps Alex will post a link.

We are using Sprint with a 727 modem in our Cradlepoint router. We have had good connection with the internet in our truck with the router mounted in the bedroom and the antenna on the bedroom window of our 5th wheel.

something i have just recently learned that fits into this thread, is that windows mobile PDA/PPC/smart phones wifi capabilites ( some have that, some don't )

can be used as 'internet connection share point' wifi router & isp connection, with use of an add on app like ICS or wifi router

there are advantages & dis-advantages to every way of doing things

using the wifi capable WM PDA/ppc means ONE less piece of equipment to buy and carry around,

it also means ONE device is doing both functions, and sometimes (2) devices in harmony make better use of the available bandwith, and the cradlepoint likely has a stronger/better wifi & more efficient routing capabilities for connecting numerous PC's, spread around a campsite vs (2) PC's in the RV

Our mounted laptop does the navigation with S&T with a bluetooth GPS receiver and my surfing, email and picture uploading. It also has the tethered phone attached via USB for internet. The phone is connected to a Wilson roof mount cellular antenna, 301119. I usually do not turn the laptop off when I am done, just put it in standby, and the phone stays charged via the USB cable. When we want to use the phone for voice we use the speakerphone or the bluetooth headset. The laptopp batteries get charged when we charge the house batteries with the generator.
We used a router last year and had to power it up with the inverter when the DW wanted to fire up her laptop. I don't see sharing as a drawback, I see it as a benefit.
