We will be on our way to E Glacier in May for the summer. DW and I are discussing stocking up on food stuff on the way. Should we do it in Denver where we will visit relatives or in Montana(no sales tax) in Billings or Great Falls on the way. The other option is in Missouri(no sales tax on food stuff). I favor MT since we won't have to haul and work around it while traveling. DW favors getting it in MO because she thinks the pricing will be better. So, are canned and boxed food goods priced different in MO as compared to Denver or MT?
Thank Bill

Any large town will have grocery stores where you will be able to buy at competitive prices. Maybe you should have your wife watch "the long trailer" again just to be sure what she is asking for. The few cents you might save in MO will likely be offset by the increase in fuel used to get that stuff to MT. JMHO

If MY wife wanted to buy the food in Missouri, that's where we'd buy it. Then I could complain about the extra weight the whole trip. In honesty, it probably would be cheaper in Missouri. Because of the competition, Denver might be the next cheapest place, but I don't know what the sales tax is there. (Colorado leaves it up to each county to decide.) Billings would probably be the next best, although Wyoming doesn't tax food either.

Billings has a Costco, if you have a membership, and Great Falls and Cheyenne both have Sam's Clubs. No sales tax would be charged on food at any of those, and prices would be reasonable.

Great Falls - there is a Sams Club there. Kalispell has a nice Costco - we haven't been there in three years so bound to be more stuff in Kalispell. Both Great Falls and Kalispell are about the same distance from East Glacier if I remember correctly - we were at St Mary three summers ago!

Enjoy yourselves!

If you're coming from the east, you probably wouldn't be coming through Kalispell unless you wanted to see what the west side of the divide looks like. If so, Kalispell has a Costco that was built approx 2 years ago just on the north edge of town.

I'd stock up on groceries in Great Falls. Our prices can't be that much more than in another state. And, yes, we do not have a sales tax. As previously mentioned there is a Sam's Club in Great Falls and many other grocery chains.

Having lived in MT for many yers before moving out here to WA, I believe your best bet is to stock up in Great Falls due to the convenience of not having to haul the stuff for long distances. And you will be able to get to know your way around town in case you need other things while you're staying at East Glacier. Good luck on your summer's stay at GNP!
