I have read all of the responses and I genuinely appreciate everyone's responses.
Some I actually enjoy and some, while I can see your side, it doesn't mean that I have to agree.
Some responses are downright funny and not serious at all. I enjoy the humor.
I enjoy seeing just how diverse people can be, so I will not be flaming any one here.
The place I was camping at, a lot of locals drive down and camp there (yes they are a mile or two away from their home) and they take over sections of the campground and have sort of an attitude of entitlement. As I used to live in the area, I called some old friends and talked to them. They confirmed the attitude and were dismayed as this area used to not be like that and has only done so with the housing market boom.. (maybe they are sore about their house values?)
Time to have fun and go camping... I am gong to need to remember the syrup idea for the worst offenders... (Only adults may be the subject of any prank that may or may not be performed by me on on my behalf)

My boys have been taught respect for others when camping and any other time.
Some parents do not teach it at any time.
My boys also learned "Dark thirty" while camping. When it got dark your voices were lowered. And other peoples campsites are their homes while they are there.
They have both been camping since they were infants. They are now 13 and 15. We get many compliments on their behavior while camping.

I agree with BMach. You should have considered leaving if your wife was that sick. It seems that kids should be able to play outdoors while camping. That is natural and expected by most campers.
Imagine if someone asked you to roll up your awning because it blocked their view or not to have a campfire because the smoke smell made them sick...
The parent's comment was inappropriate, but in my opinion your request was also inappropriate for the time and place.

I fail to see why posters are telling the OP that he & his family should have gone home rather than "inconveniencing" the noisy children. Those kids - who were probably just being normal kids doing normal kid things - had an entire campground -including their own campsites - to romp & play in. There was no compelling reason why they had to be doing their kid things 3 feet away from the OP's camper. If the situation was exactly as the OP described it, I feel his simple request for the kids to play elsewhere was entirely reasonable. All things being equal the OP's wife probably felt she could be as comfortable in the camper as she would be at home. As long as she didn't feel the need to leave, why should the family give up their camping weekend? All they were asking for was a little consideration.

I just have to say WOW...
I am beginning to see that there are two kinds of people responding here.
Those that are considerate and I want to camp next to.
And those that are not and I prefer not to camp next to you..
I have grown up camping and have been taught to be respectful of others and their rights. I have also been taught to help when and where I can.
I am usually the first one to offer help, should I see a person in need. I have spent hours of my camping time helping someone who had problems. While this took away from my personal time, I made a friend, usually had a beer or two and hopefully that person will pay it forward from there..
I am very approachable and have been in the past when I did something that needed some sort of adjustment. In every case I have never gotten snotty or disrespectful.
With everything that has been said here. Keep in mind that any sound can be enjoyable. At some point that same sound can become noise pollution. This point varies by day by person and by situation. I ask this... Do you go camping to piss off, inconvenience or irritate you neighbors?
I fail to see why asking that kids play a little further away (when you have more than 50 yards of camping space) is in any way affecting their pursuit of life liberty or happiness and as such requires someone to be a complete ass or even a partial one at that.
As to the question of the tree.. The tree was part of the divider. So neither on my spot or theirs.. The spots are right next to each other and the tree is more of a hedge than a regular tree..
