The 500 miles is for the rear gears not the engine. Engine comes "alive" around 20-25K and your milage should improve. My 5.9 kept getting better up to 50K. I consider that actually you went to the "bright" side due to the ear to ear grin (pearly whites).
I have a question about the ECM software. As far as updates go, is that something that owners are notified of kinda like a recall or is it up to the new owner responsible for contacting the dealer and checking for new updates or TSB's?
Congrats on the new truck and no, Dodge wont contact you. They wait until you come in with a problem and then the do the update.
However, I do not recommend getting a software update unless you need it because sometimes they sneak undesirable changes in on you.
Actually, I did get a recall notice in the mail for this.
Sometimes, but not always they'll issue a recall notice ~ it pays to educate yourself prior to getting an update. Lots of folks were angry about the backup alarm DC snuck in on them.
Doh!!!! I am one of them!!! thing scares the (expletive) out of me.

Haven't seen the backup alarm.....Mine doesn't have it...as of yet. Is it like the backup alarms you hear on commercial type vehicles like trash trucks? Where does the sound originate from?...the horn or is there already an alarm thats installed but not active until they update the ECM? That would be annoying.........
Looking forward to towing with it. Can't wait to see how well the exhaust brake works going down a grade with the trailer. Part of the deal was the dealer is paying to have the Line-X spray on bed liner installed, so hopefully they do it this week befoe my trip.
Also what is this regen thing? I read about it in the owners novel. Is it something the engine computer does by itself when it gets full or do you have to do it somehow by driving it a certain wayor certain distance?

The back up alarm they speak of only sounds when the door is open and you're trying to back up. Its actually the horn honking.
I don't know if my truck has it,because I don't need my door open to back my truck up.

You've got it. If you have your seatbelt unhooked and you put into reverse, the horn will honk.

There is a "filter" on the exhaust called a diesel particulate filter (DPF). It traps the soot that would normally be expelled out the tailpipe. There are sensors before and after the DPF in the exhaust pipe. Once the computer senses that the DPF is getting full/clogged (because of a differential in pressure between the fore and aft sensors), it goes into "regeneration mode" and injects a small amount of fuel into the cylinder when the piston is on the way up pushing out the exhaust gasses (the exhaust stroke). This fuel the goes, unburned, into the DPF. Once in the DPF, the fuel reacts with the catalyst material inside the DPF and effectively burns the soot out of the DPF, thereby cleaning it.
I believe cleaning the DPF (regen) is done best/most completely when the truck is running at a constant speed for over 30 min or so (like when on the hwy).
All 3 current diesels (Ford Navistar, GM Duramax, and Dodge Cummins) are equipped with this system to meet the newest emissions standards.

You'll love your Dodge/Cummins diesel. I tow about 12k easily with my 3500 RAM so in your case you probably won't even notice the trailer. Here are some Dodge forums you'll find interesting and informative:
If he likes his as much as I like mine he will have the 500 miles before he leaves!! I have been driving mine everywhere I go, the wife doesn't understand why we always have to drive the truck now!! My first trip isn't till May 16th, but I want as many miles as I can get before I hook up!!

The exhaust brake works great, you'll love it.
It happens if you open the door too early, like you put it in park, open the door but maybe the ECM doesn't recognize it is in park yet, so you get a flash of a horn. After my last oil change, the service writer pulled the truck up for me, hopped out, it did the same exact thing. I said "You see what you guys did man". Actually, all you have to do is put it in park and wait 1 second, it wont do it anymore.
