Our cruise control went out and we checked all fuses. We have extended ins. so we took it to a repair shop that will do repairs on the truck. We told the guy to call us before they did any repairs and we would call the ins. company. Well today we got a call that our rig was ready and the bill was $595.00 . They said this was for the diagnostics. They said the cruise corrected itself. yeah rght. We think the fixed it and forgot about calling ... Has anyone else had a diagnostic done on their truck We think it is usually $100-150 ...

I hope you had it in writing that they had to get approval before doing the work. If not you might be stuck, IMO.

Most States have Auto Repair provisions that require the owner be contacted with the repair cost estimate prior to any work being done, and did they have an estimated cost of repair on anything that you signed when you dropped it off? That is usually a requirement as well. Call your DMV and report this.

This is controlled at the state level. In California, there is the automotive bureau of repairs and it is dictated that a repair station is not allowed to do a repair without prior authorization from the customer. Whenever you drop a vehicle off for repair, they are to provide you with a written estimate for the diagnosis which is generally waived if you choose to have the repair done. That form should have a dollar amount on it which they can't exceed without talking to you. I'd do a search on the internet for Bureau of Repair and the state to see if something similar exists where you had the repairs done.
Good luck, I hope it works out.
