Hi folks!
Weve just picked up our new 07 Keystone Springdale 179RD and we just love it! We have one problem though. The a/c worked great with my generator for about an hour and a half and then the a/c just quit! I've heard that a/c doesn't normally run from most folks generators and I may have pushed the envelope on mine. The generator is a 3500 watt chinese generator. It's really a nice genny and it has been very good to me, but this was my first suspect of the crime.
I decided to hood up the power to the trailer via the house with an extension cord and it would'nt fire up the a/c either!
I realized that the extension chord was a very small guage of wire so I went to HOme Depot and bought a 12 ga. wire 25' extension chord. While speaking with the gentleman at HD, he told me that he was an old HVAC tech and said to check the fan motor of the a/c unit. He said that if it was sitting on the lot for a while, the bearings on the fan motor might have had their grease worn or dried up!
I hooked up the new 12 ga chord and had the same old problem. No air being blown. So I went up on top of the rig and took off the shroud and tried to spin the fan. It was tight! Very snug!! After spinning it a couple of revolutions, it finally fired up! It ran for a good 45 minutes and then after enjoying a nice cool cabin with my beautiful wife... it stopped again!
What do you think? Am I doing something wrong? This is my first RV and I very well might be doing something wrong, but I really don't want to take my RV back to the dealer to have them check it out and say every thing is ok and they couldn't find anything wrong.
Has anyone else had this experience?
Thanks a bunch for your replies!
Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not after you!

From the sound of it, you have good reason to take it back and have the dealer fix it. Something IS wrong.

The fan on top is the condenser fan. It transfers the heat from the hot, high pressure refrigerant to the air. As you found, the bearings are bad and the motor must be replaced.

All men over age 50 should get an annual PSA blood test. Mine had a low reading, but the yearly jump was significant. The biopsy showed cancer just entering the aggressive stage. Dr. Hackenslash removed it.

I think you answered your own question. When you took the shroud off and tried to turn the fan, it was "tight". after you turned it a few turns it worked for 45 minutes. Did you go back on top and see if the fan was "Tight" again? If you had, you would probably found out that the fan was stuck again. I would say that the motor has bad bearings/bushings. Also I would not run that AC with a 15 amp extension cord. That AC takes quite a bit to "start" it. Take it back to the dealer and have the fan motor checked and then try it on a 30 amp circuit

Sounds like warranty work to me too. I would take note of how they treat you on the warranty work after the sale too, sometimes it's difficult to get the dealership to work on things but not always. I say this because this is when you find out how good the dealership really is...

I had heard that you shouldn't even run your A/C when it is plugged in at your home but only for a few minutes as it draws to much power?? They said it will fry the cord. Is this true?

No, it is not true as stated. You should have a 20 amp circuit with a minimum 12 gauge cord. Watch the voltage, if it drops too low it can cause damage. I think the number is around 108 volts, someone else may know for sure. Do all that and you will be fine.

Thanks, guys! The dealer wants me to bring my genny to the shop. They want to measure the power coming from the genny, but that shouldn't have anything do do with it failing when it's hooked up to the house with the 12 ga chord. I'm going to make sure they take off the top shroud and spin the fan to see if it spins freely. Thanks again for the advice!
