Norm, It is a mechanical engine.

Thanks for your reply. My take is different engines have different requirements and it is best to follow the owners manual that came with your engine. If in doubt call Cummins or CAT. There are different ways to prime the fuel / purge the air from diesel engine fuel systems. So there is no one answer that fits all engines.

I have an '03 Endeavor and I fill one filter, reinstall, click on switch then start engine and let run short period of time then do second the same way. Have had no problems.

I have an '03 Endeavor and I fill one filter, reinstall, turn on key a couple of times and then crank engine let run short time and repeat the process for the second filter and have never had any problems.

I just did my Cat today and I installed them dry and did the hand pump for 45 min. before I removed them and filled the filters and pumped about six more times and started the eng. For mine filling the filters first is the way to go.

A trucker told me to fill both filters with PowerService, so I did. I cycled the key 5 times (30 seconds in between) and started it. Ran on fast idle for 5-10 minutes, purring like a kitten. Shut it off and restarted and it fired right back up.

Nerve-racking for sure!

Thanks again.

LLT,

It is quite possible that your coach setup allowed fuel to drain from the primary fuel filter back to the tank when you removed the filter, leaving a LOT of air for the manual pump to move.

A shutoff valve at the inlet to the primary filter would solve that.

I have always installed the fuel filters dry in my Cummins engines and do the key procedure to purge the air. Sometimes I have to pruge more times than the instructions say, but the engines have always fired right up.

Both Cummins and Spartan told me to install the filters dry.
My manual says to install dry and follow the priming procedure, so I do. Never fialed yet.
