We have our normal 12-15 short trips booked through April 2009. We continue to plan for a trip to Canada in June and July. Now if fuel gets to $5.00 a gal, then I may have to stop around NY or even Virginia. While the DW is still working, I receive only retirement and we still have the Brain Enriched Son starting his Masters. We cannot continue to absorb the steady increase in fuel cost and continue to enjoy our way of life. So closer to home we will stay but I Will Not Sell My Rig

Well we have @50K in the truck and @42K in the camper..That's a lot of motel stays.. and extended stay rates can be about half of the above stated rates. My Diesel fuel for a 300 mile day at todays fuel price would be 125.00 alone..plus a campground fee. So the question is how many days can one afford to spend 125.00 per day in diesel fuel + campground fees. We understand the poster completly. Rv'ing is very expensive if you travel a lot as we do. 15K miles a year would be over 6K dollars in diesel cost alone at todays fuel cost. If you can afford that ..bless your good fortune...many can't.

Sorry to see have to give up camping, maybe you can return when the kids grow up. You might be looking for things to do then. Good luck to you.

Yup. I've started using my PUP more and more. Easier on the gas vs the 31' TT when towing.

I am going to be spending 7 nites in Pismo Beach, Ca., along the coast--next month--at about $41 per nite or 283.80. Now, if I was going to spend the same time in the same area--at a Best Western hotel/motel--the bill would be $1027.95 for the same time period. It is about 200 miles 1 way and about 175 for a tank full of deisel---so $175.00 plus 1027.95=$1202.95 or $283.80 plus $175.00=$458.80. I am keeping the 5'vr and the truck and probably having a much better time and meeting much nicer people. Lars

I too sold my fiver and am now trying to sell my Chevy 3500. The problem is that with Diesel prices where they are, the number of trucks available is climbing which is making these trucks not worth as much.

We would like to get a smaller trailer and a smaller truck, but I don't want to sell my truck for nothing.

If the RV and tow veh were free than it would be cheaper to camp then to motel it. My Honda civic gets 40 - 50 mpg on the freeway and the Dodge gets 15 (if I'm lucky) towing the trailer. The truck and camper cost close to $60,000. At $2000 a week that's 30 weeks of vacation. Factor in insurance, fuel, scheduled services and a campsite and I suspect that it costs several hundred a night to travel in the RV.

There are many reasons to RV but saving money isn't one of them.

Just caught this thread, got to page two and jumped to post.

Is the sky really falling?

We just got back from a 7 day trip in AR, over 1700 miles round trip...did it hurt? Well not much more...but yes we felt it.

We are camping again this weekend, are we doing 1700 miles? No, more like under 40. My 4.5 year old daughter doesn't know about gas prices, nor does she care...but we staying closer to home that is for sure.

I don't think I would sell my rig based on fuel prices yet....I also don't mind going to a PU and an SUV. I would camp in my driveway before I sold my rig.

Ok off my soap box.

For us it's easy drive shorter and stay longer. We enjoy the RV too much to give it up.

Don't have much to add to the thoughts already given.... I guess each person has to make their own decision based upon their own circumstances; however, I just had to respond to the pictures in this poster's signature.......

Your Artic Fox 29 5T is my dream 5ver! Can you shoot me a PM about your experience with it? If only I could win the lottery... I'd be at the dealer's tomorrow to buy one... (but they tell me you have to play to win )
