You know, you watch them little boogers like a hawk and the first time you look away they do something totally unexpected don't they?

We took our new trailer out for it's shakedown cruise. Our daughter and her family came too. They have a 13 month old little boy who is our pride and joy. He likes Grandpa's new trailer. Unfortunately the stairs call to him and he cannot resist. We must have told him "no-no" a hundred times as we plucked him off there.

I was washing dishes and grandma turned her head away for just a second. That was all it took for him to hit the screen door at a full stagger (he thinks he running) and out he flew. Needless to say that took a couple of years off my life that I can't spare.
He was alright. A few scrapes and a knot on his little head but for the most part ok. Grandma on the other hand is not ok. She came unglued. She stayed that way for most of the afternoon too.

We had the screen door shut and latched but it was no match for little Wyatt.

What I need is a good latch to prevent this from happening again.

Any solutions out there?

Thanks,

Bill

How about an old fashion screen door latch, the hook type.

We have the same issue with our young children, I put a lock on the door to keep it from opening. Now that our son is 4, he is able to unlock it, however he makes sure to keep it locked so his "little Sissy" doesen't fall.
I purchased a simple "pin" lock at my local Lowes store, it works very well.

That's a great idea. I was concerned about the ability of the screen door to still bond (latch up) with the outside door. That seems like it should do the trick.

Thanks,

Bill

Does your assist handle swing toward the door?

Our stair assist grab handle lifts and swings out of it's against the trailer position into the parallel to the steps position. We are also able to lift and pull it in FRONT of the door. We reach through the screen slider deal, lift and swing it so it blocks the screen door. The screen door pushes open only an inch or two.

The problem is remembering to do it every time. And we still forget.

On our last trailer, DH installed slide locks like you see in public restrooms. You could reach in from the outside, slide it locked or unlocked. A bracket was mounted to the frame and another on the screen door itself. High enough out of her reach, but still allowing us to lock/unlock from outside.

YES The Grab Assist Handle works for our 2 yoa, I have thought about installing a lock but the grab assist handle swung in front of the screen door is perfect

we just keep the main door shut for now, until our two little ones are a bit older. Just not willing to take the risk of one of them taking a header off of the stairs. We have plenty of windows that open so it is not a big deal. If there are enough of us and the kids are outside then we will have the screen door only.

Take care
Mike

Bill: The next thing that's going to happen once you get the door latched shut is the screen is going to get pushed out. Here's what I did to save our door screens. Couple of pieces of aluminum and a florescent light diffuser from Lowes,Menards,or Home Depot cut to fit.

Haven't replaced a screen yet.

Great idea with the diffuser. I just picked up a premade guard for the screen from Lowes. Also have one grandpuppy who would like to go through the screen, and having already been there in the stick house, we applied the same solution.
