I have a Reese Friction Sway Bar that I use and my question is once the unit is mounted, how tight do you need to make the bar by turning that little lever? I am guessing to turn it as tight as you can but I could be wrong and maybe that doesn't give the bar any room to move on the balls. Any help would be great.

The lever is for activating and deactivating sway control. It is not an adjustment. Therefore it should be as tight as possible.

I agree... One thing I will note is this. while you are not to lubricate the friction part of the sway bar, i remove my handle and put a dab of grease on the bolt for tightening the bar... lot less running torque and easier to get it completely set...

I use a Reese Friction Sway bar. I make it as tight as I can get it! Never had a problem using the same one on 2 different trailers and 2 different tow vehicles. It must work pretty good, I've never had a sway issue!

Tight man! make 'er tight!

Thanks for the replies guys. I feel better about how tight I was making it and it appears that was the right thing to do.

The above members comments are correct.
Here is a copy/paste of a post I made in a thread earlier but it applies to your situation also.

What you are doing now is the correct procedure for a friction sway control. That handle that you tighten is supposed to be an on/off device and not an adjustment device. When you tighten it all the way and then back it off till the handle is parallel with the tongue, you know exactly how much tension is being put on the bar each time you use it. The adjustment for tension is the small square bolt near the bottom under the handle.
Most sway bars are adjusted from the factory for the average user and don't need any adjustment. If you do need to adjust, use that small bolt that I mentioned above and only turn it in 1/4 turn increments at a time. A little goes a long way.
