It's a hot summer night and we're on the road and make a stop in a Walmart or Flying J parking lot to get a few hours sleep before hitting the road again. Do we use the generator and A/C?

Why would you not use it, just be sure it is chained down very well.

Depends.. if it's a built-in gen, sure. If not, probably have to look around and make that decision based on the type of neighborhood you're in. Also noise.. are the trucks around you making noise? How loud is your generator?

By the way, I hope you get more than a 'few hours' of sleep before driving.

Sure I would use it.

But first I figure out which place the DW and kids will spend less at, then I pick that one!

As long as it does not violate any law (noise ordinance)...

It would take an unusual person to start making up rules for camping in parking lots

Most Flying J and Pilots that we have pulled into to fuel up have lots of very big noisy trucks idling their motors and running their refrigeration units... plenty of noise to drowned out your generator.

Just like using all other things that could be annoying to your neighbors. In WM if you're at the end of the parking lot and your exhaust points away from any other travelers, sure. If you pull in at midnight you don't park 6' from your fellow traveler and point the genny exhaust (or noise) at them and turn it on.

Common sense and common courtesy ALWAYS apply, whether you're paying for the spot or not. Different considerations with truck stops as a lot of main and aux engines are always running.
