Common courtesy, IMO. If there are idling engines and others are using theirs, yes. If your exhaust is pointing at your neighbor who has his windows open, no.
That said, yes I use mine all the time. Either there are already noisier vehicles present, or I'm the only one there. I run my genny when parked at an attraction and leave the AC running.
You guys really end up with a group in the parking lots of America? I'd say agree with the rest of them. On the people that complained, tell them to shut up. Or just explain you're just going to run it for a bit. I would think that to an extent there aren't the same expectations of quietness that you'd find in a campground.
It seems to me that most Wal Marts are private property and as such, you'd be about as welcome as you would be parked in my drive with a noise maker running. In 5 years we've parked at a Wal Mart 1 time and that was in Nogales, AZ comming from Mexico to find a currency exchange. 1 hour and we were gone.

They'd have kissed my gas, before I turned it off,did the big trucks running all night NOT bother them, did they go tell a truck driver to turn his off? I'd have paid money to watch that.
Now, having said that, why did you not run your furnace on LP, instead of using an elec heater?

Yep thats what I say. If I need to run the gen I would run the gen and those that dont like it can just go go (see the man in the red suit with the pitch fork, horns and tail)

You are just Kidding,
Right?
I agree!
Not running a generator at a Flying J would be a lot like not spitting in the ocean because you were afraid you would start a flood.

We don't have a furnace -- just the HydroHot, and it makes just as much noise as the generator. We were trying to be considerate to our neighbors, but in retrospect they weren't being very considerate! We were in the RV portion of the FJ lot - next time we should park with the big rigs. I'm sure they wouldn't have any objections.
