I have read a few posts here and I'm a little confused as to what 'workamping' is.

I'm envisioning it as a traveling worker, such as, say, a pipeline welder, who travels the country welding on various pipelines, for weeks or maybe months, untill the job is done, then moves on to the next job, wherever that may be, all the while living in his RV of some kind, whether that be on the job site, at a nearby campground, or wherever.

Is this an accurate description of 'workamping'?

Kinda, although workkamping can mean different things to different people.

For instance, my wife and I have volunteered for several years at campgrounds, museums, light houses, etc. No pay, just a FHU. There are many others who work for pay at COE parks, private preserves, private campgrounds, etc.

I prefer volunteer work, but if someone wanted to pay me....

there has been tons of information about workamping posted here on this forum and going back through some of them might be your best bet of getting a good representative idea about workamping.....cause.....many workampers are heading out or moving right now to summer positions.

Work-camping-workamping usually involves living in your RV on a camping property and performing campground work eg cleaning bathrooms, working in the camp store, maintenance stuff, etc for at minimum no rent and some places includes no rent with utilities included and an hourly rate. Some have minimum stays and minimum hours required and a seasonal commitment eg Memorial Day thru Labor day or a one month commitment. It all depends.

Traveling around doing welding, etc is usually called itinerant labor. I did that in my 20's installing telephone systems.

Boy, were those the days.

Workcamping is generally working in some form a campground or park environment in exchange for a site and often a small amount of money or other benefits like meals.

My parents have had two workcamping experiences where they worked at a YMCA and a retreat center. In both cases, they received all means and a FHU site in exchange for a few hours of work several days a week.

As you can see, there is a great difference of opinion here. Most of the RV magazines define work-camping as living in your RV while to travel and work for some organization for either benefits or for money. Some do choose to work in an RV park at one of the many jobs that they have. If you follow the advertising by employers who seek RV people to fill seasonal positions, you will find that it includes a much wider range of job. Many amusement parks, such as both Dollywood and Disney World, advertise in the magazines to solicit specifically, RV employees.

I have seen ads by dude ranches, tourist trade stores, working ranches, house sitting positions, circus and carnival groups, pumpkin & Christmas tree lots, See's Candy and Hickory Farms, and many others. Work-camping could be just about any work that can be done while living in an RV and residing in an area for a fairly short period of time.

As to the term "workamping" that was coined by a company as the name of the magazine that they publish. It is called "Workamper News" and it is by far the largest place that potential employers of RV folks advertise. And it is also the best source of positions for those of us who live this lifestyle.
