We have been looking at lake houses in the NC and SC area. After doing some rough searching I saw that SC has a personal property tax that looks very substantial. Is it true that SC actually taxes motor homes and all vehicles you own ? Is it just registered vehicles in Sc or all vehicles you own ? I saw a rate of $268 for a $10,000 car. That would equal over $4000 just for the motor home. Is this for real ?? Sorry if this was discussed before, but my searches did not come up with much.

Very real and some counties really pursue it. If you are a property owner/resident you pay. My buddy pays about $4k a year on his A bus. Diesel is cheap though. I would really check it out before going there, hope you get responses from SC residents.

There is personal property tax on registered vehicles in the state of SC (I have lived in five different states, and they ALL had personal properaty tax on vehicles). If you DON'T pay the tax, you lose your vehicle license, the DMV will not renew it for that year. IF you are a SC resident (you live here for more than 90 days) you must register your vehicles in SC. When you are caught, not if but when, you will pay hefty fines and all back taxes, license fees, etc.

I have lived in 2 states, Pa. and N.Y., and never had to pay personal property tax on vehicles. We pay sales tax on them when purchased but not a yearly tax.Maybe your yearly license fees are less. Ours are $40-$50. Your taxes sure make owning a nice motor home and a few nice boats and cars a painful taxing experience. Thanx for the info. SC is scratched from the list.

I have my MH registered as a " Second Home" This cut the taxes by more than half. The only downside is that as a vehicle the tax will go down with depreciation, as a second home the value stays the same.
This is not illegal or shady, it was offered to me when I went to pay the taxes. Just be prepaired with the bill of sale because they will base the rate on their " Book " cost.

SC Sounds like a neat place to visit, but not a place to live outside the realms of the ultra rich.

Where does the revenue go from a yearly vehicle tax ? If you already paid sales tax when purchased and pay yearly registration and license fees and also pay fuel tax what is this tax for ?

The taxes here in S.C. are a bargin compared to when I lived in Ca. My MH was $70,000. new and the taxes are about $700. a year. You pay $ 300. sales tax on any vehicle you buy.
They call it property tax and goes to the county. They show a breakdown for smaller items like fire depts and schools but the majority goes to the county for ??.
From what I read on the forum, its Pretty reasonable for everyone, not just the ultra rich.

That's one of the reasons we decided to sell our retirement property in NC... The State is not very kind regarding taxes and vehicle impact fees We have no personal propery tax in Illinois - all kinds of other taxes, but no PP tax...
