No wonder why so many motorhomes are registered in Montana and trailers registered in Maine. I saw that NC even wants you to claim unregistered vehicles, boats etc.
The money from personal property taxes is the major source of revenue for the counties in SC. This state ain't for the ultra-rich cuz we sure aren't. We have one of the lowest income tax rates in the country. We moved here from NC to get away from one of the highest taxing states in the country (I am surprised they haven't tried to tax the air you breathe). The registration fees on cars and trucks here in SC is around $20 a year, popup is $10. We also pay no sales tax on most food items unlike many other states.
I'd be wary of registering in MT. The Colorado Dept. of Revenue just went after a bunch of folks here for doing that, for felony tax evasion charges. Went after 122 RV'ers for the tune of $2.7 million in unpaid sales taxes, penalties and interest. OUCH! They were ordered to pay restitution, register their RV's in Colorado and perform community service.

I have lived in 2 states, Pa. and N.Y., and never had to pay personal property tax on vehicles. We pay sales tax on them when purchased but not a yearly tax.Maybe your yearly license fees are less. Ours are $40-$50. Your taxes sure make owning a nice motor home and a few nice boats and cars a painful taxing experience. Thanx for the info. SC is scratched from the list.
You forgot to mention that while NY doesn't have a personal property tax, they do have a school tax, which SC & many other states do not have. When I lived in NY, my school tax was more than my land taxes. Frankly, I find the personal property tax, a lot more fair than school tax, in NY, if you own property(real estate), you pay school tax, whether or not you have children going to school, my grandmother paid school tax at age 92, & didn't have a child in school for around 70 years. At least with persoal property tax, you only pay if you have a regestered vehicle, (motor cycle, car, boat,MH)if you don't have one, you don't pay.SC is not the only one with a personal property tax, Va has it also, & i'm sure there are other states that do too.

Actually we do have a school tax;Its broke down onto your yearly vechicle tax.Out of my yearly tax for my TT $140 goes to the schools,$5.00 goes for capital replacement fund, and $3.oo goes to USC Lancaster. There is a break down on all your personal property taxes with a certain percentage going to this and that.In the county I live in we also get tacked $75.00 per year on our taxes for our house that goes to the fire dept.Like stated before they use their book value which could be higher or lower,It doesn't matter what you pay for it.
