I have two questions and a little history behind them.
I have an Onan genset 4000 that is new to me. It is a model BGE spec. K. When I first got it, it sounded like it wanted to start, but would not run. I found that the generator shares the same fuel tank as the RV motor. The tank has a non-vented fuel cap which I believe creates a vacuum in the fuel tank starving the generator of fuel. I removed the fuel cap and generator started and ran for several minutes before I turned it off. Would a vented fuel cap remedy this problem?
The following day I parked the RV in the driveway which is sloped. I removed the fuel cap again and started the generator without much difficulty. I let it run for several minutes again before I shut it off. Twenty minutes later I had trouble trying to start it again and it started to make a strange noise while trying to start it. It was a metal on metal sound or like a buzz saw. Would operating the generator on a slope cause the oil to sit on one side of the oil sump, starving the motor of oil?
Most generator that run off the main fuel tank are plumed so you can't run all the fuel out of the tank. I had one that would not run if the tank was down to 1/4. I guess it is possible to starve the oil sump if parked on a slope. But you should have a low oil feature that would shut down the generator.

I'll fill the fuel tank all the way up before trying again. The oil level is full on level ground. Can changing the starter drive or starter be done by the average do it yourselfer, or should I take in to be serviced?
