I am taking a trip to the west coast this August. I have a Four Winds Kodiak 33K. Was considering driving route 1 - would like to know if this is a reasonable route for this size rig. Thanks!

The mid Ca. is duable, gets a little scary around Big Sur. Some of it meets up with the 101. I'm not sure above San Francisco. I hear the northern end has some very windy areas.
Also, the west coast is 1200 + miles long.
You will see some of the prettiest coastline in the country.

Which part of 1 are you talking about? It is a very long drive, and even in your car, it would get very tedious to do the entire coastline. But Highway 1 from Monterey to Morro Bay, Big Sur, is beautiful. It would be less stressful driving it north so that you're driving on the side away from the drop-off. Very scary there.

oh, that's certainly true...but the farther north you go, the scarrier it can get. up around ft. bragg to where 1 finally turns inland toward 101 are some very tight, very narrow lane slow roads with switchbacks. not sure if there is a posted length restriction, but with drop offs into the ocean and nowhere to go on the other side, you might want to check further. that's edging toward iffy.

That's a road you only want to do ONCE. A whole lot of twisty turns, take some dramamine.

Also there are sections, once you get on there is no getting off till the end of that loooooooong section. If there is a wreck - pack a lunch, you'll be there for hours, been there done that.

North of San Francisco the road is exhausting. Last time I drove it I was in a Nissan pu with power steering, and my arms & shoulders were sore after 3 hours or so....I bailed out & went 101

I don't think there are any restrictions. I've followed 40 foot buses up that way, and camp with people every year that have brought large rigs through there.

You do have to take your time. It's the wrong place to be in a hurry.
