Okay, I've research all the info on how to figure dealer markup. Here's my question. At the dealer's yesterday, we found the unit we want. A sign on the counter showed their price. Let's say it read: MSRP $69,000, Sale price $59,000.
Do we consider the stated "$69,000" is their true MSRP in which to start figuring the math on? Or is that a "come on", and their true MSRP is really the $59,000 and we work down from there?

It depends...
All I can tell you is what I just did. We got an on-line quote and have been using that as the MSRP for all comparisons. So far the on-line quote had the lowest MSRP I've seen and the dealer I'm working with has higher MSRP's for the same unit so I've basically been ignoring his MSRP numbers.
btw - it's possible that at some level I could make them match but they have a base price then a "mandatory option" package with a price, then options provided with the mandatory package that have a credit and they offered an immediate few thousand discount off the list because they are a "volume buyer". The whole pricing scheme is intended to confuse you.

Depends on the brand.
Some brands (HitchHiker, SunnyBrook, et al) make their MSRP public and therefore one can compare apples to apples. Other manufacturers allow the dealer to set the "MSRP" (really the DSRP). This allows them to play with the price and make folks think they are getting 30-35%+ off the "MSRP".
Try looking online at the manufacturers website and some dealer sites and see if they list the same MSRP. If the MSRP is real, then you should shoot for paying 75-80% of the MSRP. If the MSRP is all over the map, then see what the low prices that are being offered by some dealers and you will be in the ballpark on where to haggle.
Good luck!

I'd suggest researching the lowest possible price for the unit you like on line from one of the internet dealers like RVwholesalers.com or rvdirect. There are 4 or 5 that have good reputations on this forum and they do offer very low pricing. We were going to buy ours from Rvwholesaers.com until our local dealer offered pricing as good when considering our cost to pick up the unit in Illinois. Local dealer warranty service is a myth.

Like the others have shared,
Dealer mark up is unknown.
What model are you looking at?

I think you are over complicating it. Define the unit you want and have multiple places price the sale to you.....forget what they say is the MRSP. Once you have the lowest counter lower and see what happens. MSRP is a poorly defined number that is quite meaningless...Brian

Thanks for the feedback. We are looking at a particular Montana model. I have seen advertised prices today on the internet from $74,000 down to $53,000. that IS "all over the map." $21,000 difference! Why do they make it so difficult? Oh. . .I know.

NEVER assume anything. You are purchasing a product with only the delaers OPINION as to what it's worth. If they STATE that it is MSRP then it's safe to ASSUME that they are telling you the truth. In EITHER case if you're basing the RVs worth based on ANYONE ELSE's opinion of it's worth you're fare game. Good luck / Skip

Skip,
If you are serious when you say, "If they STATE that it is MSRP then it's safe to ASSUME that they are telling you the truth" then I absolutely disagree with you. Many RV dealers determine the MSRP of the rigs they are selling. You can find the same RV at different dealers with different MSRPs. It all depends on what MSRP means. It could mean that the manufacturer says the retail price for a RV shall be whatever price the dealer determines. In other words, the manufacturer suggests the retail price the each dealer determines.
Unless you can find published MSRPs set by the manufacturer (such as NuWa), the MSRP that you find at any dealer is highly suspect. In that case the only meaningful price is the "out the door" price.
