I have Alltel phone service National Freedom 900.
I never go over my minutes, but on this months bill I got hit with Roaming Charges while we were in Monument Valley UT. This is listed as Flagstaff, AZ area. $1.20 per minute.
I know their is some areas where even with the NF Service you have to go to roam to find service, but $1.20.
The only other place I have had this happen was in Quincy Il.
I was charged $5.36 for a less than a 2 minute call.
Does this happen on other services or just Alltel?

Larry, I think it is normal with many plans. I have the original Verizon national plant (not America's Choice) and it includes roaming anywhere at no extra charge. However, I pay a premium $55.00 for 400 minutes on the plan and $.35 per minutes for any overage. Verizon is constantly trying to get me off the plan but I have told them to pound sand.
Just as with credit cards, these folks have learned how to get into your wallet in every possible way. They are what I term "Greedy bloated cash cows".

Yes most plans tend to have blank spots or holes in their service areas. We live close to canada and i have learned to look at my phone before I call or answer it...It will some times PU a tower in canada and go into roam but all I have to do is move a little (and somtimes just turn around) and I can get a US tower and be out of roam. The first time I saw a roam charge from in canada I thought it was a mistake untill they told me how it happened. What did DickA say greedy bloated ------ (I use a different term to finish this)

It happens with all services, depending the terms of your service plan.
Most providers offer plans with roaming charged by the minute, and others where you prepay monthly for "free" roaming. With prepaid roaming there are some distinctions between roaming within the provider's network and roaming off-network. Some plans with "free" roaming charge extra for off-network calls, others cover those calls but may cancel or change your plan if the proportion of calls off-network exceed a contracted limit.
I've been with regional service providers on plans with charges for roaming, national provides on plans with roaming charges, and national providers with no additional roaming charges within the U.S. These different plans have suited different needs, at different times of our life. Right now, our family has three phones from two different providers, two different plans.
If "no roaming charges" costs for example $60 a month, and the same number of minutes are $30 a month if you pay for roaming by the call, you need to figure out what the network covers, what is your home area, what is the roaming are, and where you will use the phone how much, to figure out which plan works better for you.
I can't find out any details about terms of Alltel plans because I live outside Alltel's service area.

I have the same plan as Dick A ( However, I pay a premium $55.00 for 400 minutes on the plan and $.35 per minutes for any overage. Verizon is constantly trying to get me off the plan ) but maybe an earlier plan as I pay $35.00 a month for 150 minutes plus 1500 minutes on week-ends. Works for me but I like the total free roaming.

I would also warn that if you tend to use your cell close to the Canadian border and you actually hit (use) a tower on the Canadian side and you don't have any international minutes on your plan, expect a big surprise on your next cell bill.

I was not aware that any cell phone company still made customers pay for domestic roaming. That is very 1995.

We also have Alltel. This happened once while driving through IL.
If look at their coverage map, there are some roam areas. Not enough for us to worry about.
We have had Alltel now for 4 years & love it.
