Hello everyone,

We toured some new model year 5th wheels today, and noted 2 of the models were equipped with gas struts on the entry doors. What a wonderful idea! However, before we run out to buy and install one, what is the general concensus about this? And, where do you find these to install?

Thanks in advance,

Kathy

We've had two units with the gas struts. They have their plus, but can also cause some problems. If the wind gets up you just about have to shut the door, as it starts banging. We had the strut go out after 1 1/2 years, and put on a new one. Also the thing was coming loose and had to be remounted with heavier hardware. Our current 5th is the same setup and will also probably need to be remounted some day.

As you can see by our sig we have basically have the same 5vr as kennethwooster. Our door strut came loose at the door due to wind blowing the door when opened. I had to redrill the holes to extend through the door frame and use through bolts versus the original screws. I'm seriously considering a strap or bungee cord that can be fastened to the door and somewhere on the 5vr that will help keep the door from blowing in the breeze when standing open.

I just bought the 365flts, it has the living room up front, not the bedroom. Good to know about the mounting of the strut. But I close mine if the wind starts to blow it around.

We wanted to upgrade our, but the manufacturer says our current doors don't have the guts to mount it and have it last. They want to replace door and install struts at the tune of $600. for 2 doors....Don't guess we'll do it just yet!

Rockintom,If you drill two metal plates to fit the holes in the strut and mount one to the inside and one to the outside of the door and then use through bolts with lock nuts I would think it would work unless the door is really flimsy. Can't believe on a rig like yours that it would be that bad.
