We have a 1998 30' Itasca (class A) with a 1999 Ford 6.8 liter, 275 hp, V10 engine registering 79,759 miles on it. We have driven it 26,636 mile since we purchased it 2/05. Our normal travel load weighs about 15,280 lbs plus toad & dolly weighing 2,860 lbs. Based on detailed records our total average MPG is 8.46 (this includes 33 hours of generator time). We have had no engine problems (yet).
Yes when we entered Yosemite through the East entrance (what a climb) the RPM's were very high and the MPH got down to about 20 but we made it & didn't overheat.
Have you had your engine checked? You might consider having a OBDII computer check. This could tell you if your have any plug, head or manifold bolt, fuel pump, air intake, etc. problems.
I'm no mechanic but with your lighter weight (and subject to what speed you run & where you're driving) your MPG don't sound appropriate based on our experience.

The V10 is a good engine. I've put over 176,000 miles between 2 F350's. The Banks kit is awesome but lots of $$. They like to rev so you really need to keep the transmission fluid cool.

We purchased 2005 Excursion with the V10 about a year ago. We have put 20,000 miles on it this year. It is our only car. We tow, drive the kids around, and it is a great engine. I have found using Royal Purple gear oil in the diff, channging the transmission fluid to a nice synthetic ATF, and full synthetic oil really help. I see about a 1 to 2 mpg increase with these changes. The early V-10s do shoot out spark plugs. They do have a helicoil repair that can be done it your engine is not under warranty. That is the biggest problem that I have heard of. Otherwise it is a great engine.

5) The IAC valve(Idle air control) likes to fail at the worst time. Some guys buy one from Ford and carry it with them cause it's right on top of the engine and easy to change. Might save your trip and a tow.

Just curious....(a) When the IAC valve fails....what happens to the engine..just an idle problem..or does the engine stop completely?
(b)where is it located.... I have 60K and it's 9 years old....maybe I should carry a spare...that way it will never fail ..
