Using yours for occasional weekends, I can see why you sold. But for us, we're selling the house and living in the 5'er. Bought a new diesel truck in Dec. FT will be cheaper than owning the house...and more fun too!

Why not?

Learn to conserve on your daily life to have to spend on camping. We've been preparing for the fuel rise for years. Wife's car 55 mpg highway, My car 45 mpg highway. She fills up every 2 weeks, I'm 1 1/2 weeks.

Gives us money to use hauling the camper at 10mpg..

Rather then panic, people need to see what happens when the speculators are reeled in. At $10 gallon, I think I'll park it in a nice campground in the mountains and use it for our weekend cabin.

Sorry to see you go. We are going to hang in there for now with our TT and truck getting 9 MPG. We will be staying closer to home especially on weekends, but we hope to go just as much. Good luck, hopefully this mess will somehow straighten itself out.

So the way I figure it is..... we just got back from a 10 day trip to Florida. Cost us $800.00 for gas (averaged 9 miles to the gallon) and $200.00 for camping.

If we had driven the car and stayed in motels it would have been $400 for gas and $1000 for motel rooms.

If we had flown and stayed in a house or condo, it would have been $400 for plane tickets plus whatever we could rend the condo for - probably close to $1000.

You can't count food cause you have to eat at home. So I still say it's a pretty cheap vacation and we had a whole lot of fun...... stayed at St. Andrews - an absolutely beautiful campground. I'm ready to go back - saving our pennies for next year....

You can count food if you have to eat in restaraunts, also rent a car - oops fuel for that. I think camping in rv will remain as popular as other choices, just vacations overall will decrease. I live in an area that is popular for boaters - wow talk about expensive. Hopefully lower interest rates on toys will off set fuel a bit.

Sorry for being skeptical about this post but I noticed that the OP was a "new member" so I looked at past posts to confirm that this was not a trolling expedition. It looks like they have had some unfortunate experiences with this camper. It sucks that this stuff happens but is the real reason for selling fuel costs or that the return on investment (relaxation and enjoyment of RVing) is non-existent. Looks like they did not even make a year with this unit.

Sometimes hard choices need to be made and some things must go but there is no indication other than that the "oil companies won" that this is the case. Also, no indication from previous posts if they had a smaller camper (previous commitment to the hobby) or if this was their first unit.

One size (or situation) does not fit all but I believe that if you truly enjoy this hobby you make due with the situation at hand (high fuel costs, bad weather, etc.). I too, hate to spend hard earned cash on inflated fuel prices but we deal with it and enjoy our camper closer to home. Its not necessarily the need to get FAR away but to be able to get away to enjoy the camper and the outdoors. You can do the exact same thing in your back yard but when you're at home it is just not the same.

Hopefully it will all work out for the OP. At least the camper sold.

Everyone fails to mention the initial cost of your truck and camper. That has to be included in the cost of rv,ing. We have over 85K invested in our truck and camper before we move out of the driveway. If one had to finance any part of both it is worse as you must include the cost of interest. On that 10 days trip to Florida you did not factor in the cost, per day, of your rig, insurance, etc.
One needs to factor in all the numbers to get the real cost of Rv'ing. The real numbers may be a surprise. We will all deal with the situation in our own way but it is not fair to criticize someone for doing what was right for them.

The individual will do what is right for them..Not what I or anyone else thinks they must do.. By the way..In our case it is the need to get far away.We spent years close to home and now we want to travel and see the country..It is not cheap and the high cost of energy and all that it affects is killing us.

The cost of fuel isn't really changing our life style. We do not pack the rv for week-end trips. When we bring it home and pack, it will be a 6 to 8 week long trip. Anything under 2 or 3 hundred miles, we throw a couple bags in the car and go that way. Flying is pretty well out of the question. From where we live, Midway or O'Hare are our choices and with artificial joints and screws in my body, it's not worth the hassle.
