Anyone traveled acrossed Wisconsin from St Paul Minnesota to UP Michigan? I don't see any major HWYS going across Wisconsin but I see lots of small roads. Can anyone suggest the best road going east to UP? Thanks for any help offered.

Take I 35 to Duluth then take US Highway 2 to the east. Nice drive.

That's pretty far out of the way. I've made this trip with a 5er, I stuck to the Wisconsin state highways and worked my way over to Escanaba, Michigan where I picked up US2. I know there were several different ways to do it. None of the Wisconsin state highways were any problem at all.....

Wisconsin has remarkably good roads, at least if you don't mind concrete pavement with expansion joints. Even the 2-lanes are quite good, and there are 4-lanes in surprising places (though probably not quite that far north).

We've found the non-freeway roads, highways and byways in WI to be interesting, fun and easy to travel. Agree with Sch911, see a little country on your way.

Have not been up there is a long time. (my dad is from Iron MT.) But the drive on HWY 2 is a very nice trip.

We are taking that same trip in July4th and plan to take I 94 to Eau Claire then state roads to the UP down to the bridge and on to Traverse Bay RV for the Cherry Festival and back to the FMCA in St Paul. All the roads are acceptable. Many campground choices. Pick your route and then do RVparkreviews.com for your potential overnight.

You can take Highway 8 from Forest Lake, cross the St. Croix River on into WI and take it all the way to Iron Mountain. Its a decent 2 lane road all the way. Nice easy trip. You can stop in Turtle Lake at the casino.

There is one long downgrade at the St. Croix River, semis and RVs do it all the time, and we have done it several times with the MH (36' towing a crown victoria), just be sure to downshift before you get started down. There is a red light at the bottom of the hill before the bridge, then you have the upgrade on the WI side.

The I35 to Duluth to Hwy 2 and across is also a nice option, but it does add some miles to your trip. Highway 8 has more small towns to go through than Hwy 2.

Safe travels,

Judy

Much of Wisconsin 29 to Greenbay is divided.

The most scenic part of US2 is where it stays close to the shore along the north side of Lake Michigan. You have to take secondary highways to get close to the Superior coast between Duluth and Bayfield.

Google maps suggests a shorter route between Wausau and Escanaba. That includes county roads (with letter names like C, V) through towns like Amberg. If I wanted to cut of the corner at Greenbay, I'd choose WI 52 and 64 instead. It's actually a bit shorter, and sure to be paved.

I'm surprised it didn't suggest US8 across Wisconsin to Escanaba. That looks pretty direct. It appears that WI29 has the speed advantage, at least as far east as Wausau.

Note that the further north you get in Wisconsin, especially in the east, you are in forested country rather than farmland.

We took 2 lane roads to Mackinaw from Sioux Falls,SD via the twin cities. We found US8 and US2 to be very serviceable roads for our 40' motorhomes. However the "RV Parks & Campgrounds" on US8 were not what we required, very poor access and many small sites. After checking out about 8 in a very long day (Scottiemom's birthday and she was driving) from the MN Stateline to Crandon MN, make sure you don't bypass Turtle Lake Casino RV Park like we did, when "noon was too early to stop".

Along our route, we ended up stopping at Jackpot Junction, Mystic Lakes, Mole Lake, The Island and Potawatomi Northern Lights Casinos, most of these were close to or on US8 or US2. All had RV parking with some or all hookups, except Mole Lake which had a very nice Passport Park, Northern Hideaway CG, about 5 miles away.
