Be careful when hooking up to 50 amp service.this past friday one of my best friends fried his converter,2tvs,refrigerator,microwave and other items. the cause was when he pluged in and turned on the breaker the neutral was pulled out of the campground plug. we found out that the week before the electrical pedistal was run over by an intoxicated woman on a golf cart. all the rv park person did was stand the box back up and did not check if any damage was done

That is the very reason many of us carry a gadget that checks for that condition, and others, and use it to check CG power BEFORE we plug in.

For 30 amp rig cost is about $20. For 50 amp rig cost is double, plus you need to build a splitter.

sorry for his loss,

but that is why everyone needs to check the outlet before plugging into anything.

volt testers can be cheap, ins.

Sounds like he just got a bunch of new stuff courtesy of the campground...

though it's a shame for the campground management and the loss of the stuff in the rig till it's replaced....

Anybody care to provide a link to such a tester? I'm looking for something that is plug-in. I know about the Surge Guard and Progressive Industries models that do much more than simple checking.

Thanks!

I use a voltmeter and a little simple led tester that plugs into a 15 amp receptacle through a 30 to 15 adapter to check the polarity before plugging in my RV.

I have had a 50A Surge Guard (either #18338 or #18541) in my last three rvs. Available from Camping World for $369 or $299 respectively. If there is any fault in the power, it won't allow power into the rv. I think it is preferable to a tester, because a power problem can occur any time (lightning, brown-out, etc.) and the Surge Guard will instantly shut off all power and won't turn back on until the power is restored and stable for at least two minutes. I was amazed at how many times it shut power off in various places, only to eventually turn power back on when everything was stable. I'm sure it has saved me numerous times.

I use this. For a 50 amp rig you need two of them (or one and move it), and a line splitter.

The tester Chuck shows has the added feature of testing ground fault interrupters. A simple receptacle tester (mis-named a polarity tester) does the job well and costs $5-6, and are available in every hardware store. Connect it using your 30 amp to 15 amp adapter. For a 50 amp connection, as Chuck says, you'd need a simple line splitter...PM Chuck for instructions.

All men over age 50 should get an annual PSA blood test. Mine had a low reading, but the yearly jump was significant. The biopsy showed cancer just entering the aggressive stage. Dr. Hackenslash removed it.
