We have a beetle also up here in BC that has killed off thousands of acres of timber............ They are now trying to salvage and use the wood for furniture. So far have not heard of any parks being closed. It's called the Northern Pine Beetle.......

Wow, that is a new policy that I haven't heard before. We had a big pine beetle and drought die-off here at Tahoe several years ago and they did not take such a severe course nor do I recall anyone dying from a bark beetle ravaged tree falling. The conspiracy theorist in me thinks it is just an excuse to save money.

I'm glad they've finally told the tree huggers to take a flyin' leap and remove infected trees as required. We lost at least 100,000 acres and several hundred homes in the So.Cal mtns. a few years ago because of the tens of thousands of infested and dead trees that couldn't be extinguished. Get them before they move on to other weak trees.

Jeff, very few areas have been set aside for control of the bark beetle. Probably the best situation would be a (accident) control burn to happen in an area infested with the bark beetle.

The article talks about excess aging lodgepole pines due to lack of fire as being part of the reason for more bugs. Just another example of messing with nature without understanding the full impact.
