Excellent, thanks again for all the help - made this project much more enjoyable.

Now to find an ambient light sensor to use in conjuncion with the switch hahaha.

don't forget to install a clapper for it... That would make for some good entertainment. then you could turn it off from bed if you forget to tunr the lights off beforehand...

I modified my previous post to show wiring for a selectable steady/blinker setup. The graphics didn't work out all that well , but maybe you can get the idea. I like the clapper and ambient light ideas. Maybe a dimmer?

This is what I made. Has a switch for on/off/flash.

Went to a rv show put on by a local dealer.
most of the units on display had the running lights lit up.
took a look and was amazed how simple it was.
they had taken a (Large) 15 amp automotive fuse and bridged two wires in the light/break harness to the trailer.
the two wires that were bridged are the ones beside the notched key way in the plug.
that simple.

Exactly! Just bridge Slots 3 and 4 with a Flat Blade Fuse and that is all you need. I keep one taped inside the door under the kitchen sink where silverware or other stuff is supposed to go. Stick it in when it gets dusk and take it out by 10 pm to keep the neighbors happy.

Well, I have the wiring all done but no way to test it until Saturday when I get back to the camper. All that's left is to put it all inside the housing and connect it to the trailer frame.

The only thing I'm not sure about is the non-flasher side.

Power Source
Pin 4 12v to Fuse to center switch position (off)

Flasher
Left switch position to flasher in, flasher out to lights (pin 3)

Steady
Right switch position pigtailed to flasher out to lights (pin 3)

Almost seems like I need a diode in there to stop the flow back to the flasher on the steady side, but the out of the flasher will just go to the inactive side of the switch so that may act as the flow control.

?????????????

I hate electrical work.

Look like it will work from this primitive drawing?

That's why you need a double pole double throw center off (DPDT) switch. Hook the two center terminals together and then to the fuse that goes to Pin4. That provides current to both gangs of the switch. Hook a wire from one end and one gang to Pin3. Hook a wire from the other end and the other gang to the flasher and on to Pin3. When you switch to the "constant" end, the connection will be from the switch to Pin3 and then on to the flasher and then to the open gang of the switch. So, what happens? Current flows from the switch to Pin3 and through the lamps to ground and the lamps will light. Since the gang of the switch to which the flasher is connected is open, current can't flow there. All is good. When you switch to the "flasher" side, the connection goes through the flasher (a switch) to the lamps to the other gang of the switch. Current flows (when the flasher closes) to the lamps and through the lamps to ground and the lamps light. Since that other end/other gang of the switch is now open, current can't flow there. All is good and no diode needed.

Basically, it's like having two switches. When one is on, the other is off and vice versa. What you should wind up with (assuming common switch pin outs) is a connection to each center switch connection, and a connection to oppisite corners. The other opposite corners should be left empty.

Make sense?
