Hello fellow 5 wheelers. My wife and I have been RVing for abput 4 years and got a 5th wheel about a year ago. It's great. But; on all of our trips, we wonder where is a good stop to get desiel that we can get in and out of. My question is: Is there a web site or a publication to get to tell all the better stops. We are in B'ham Al now and in 3 weeks going to Hilton Head and I don't know anything about that trip. Heck, we just got back from Port St. Joe Fl. and had the same problem. By the way, Port St. Joe State park is nice if you don't want to do anything but eat and lay on the beach. Nothing else to do and only store is the Pig (Piggly Wiggly) Nada else.

FWIW: I'm a big believer in Flying J truck stops. Most all have very easy RV access, all are RV friendly, and in a pinch you can alway's fuel up at the big rig islands. And all are about the right distance apart that we stop to stretch our legs anyhow. I plan our fuel and overnight stops when on the move around Flying J. Access their website "FlyingJ.COM" for their company location directory. I've never been in a Flying J yet that I couldn't get into or out of quite easilly.
Happy camping!!! See ya'll down the road!!!

Your question is the reason we had the inbed fuel tank installed. It makes for easier fueling because we can pick our stops. chevman

I do not know what the problem is with getting fuel. I have a 36ft fiver towing with a V-10 Ford and just have no problems getting into most places along the expressway in both Canada and US and the diesel pump is usually right there with the others or in the next island. Don't be afraid to block off part of gas station or have your DW stop traffic to back out onto the roadway. Works for us and we have never really had a problem.

Try the publication called "The Next Exit" It's exactly what your asking for.

1. The "Next Exit" tells you what is -at- the next exit,
it doesn't tell you -if- you will "fit" into the bays
at a gas/diesel station.
~
2. Your problem is not uncommon - especially in cities.
I have learned to start looking for fuel well in advance
of when I "really" need it.
~
3. Doesn't matter what your capacity is - you can still have a
problem when it's time to get to the pump/s. (Back to #2).
~
4. No big deal blocking an entry or exit - but,
sometimes a "hard to access" station will require backing up to
get back out . . . . much better to skip those. (Back to #2)

We find flying J's are the most large Rv friendly stations. We are 54 feet long truck and camper and we can have big problems getting in and out of fuel stations. Fueling to us, is the worst part of long distance travel. Many Pilot stations do not yet have ULSD. We also run from Flying J to Flying J truck stops. Most stations will have the diesel pump in with the auto gas pumps causing you to block many pumps . Flying J has separate "big truck" style pull through Rv pumps both gas and diesel. Although you can use the big truck pumps we try not to as these truckers are on a schedule and time is money to them while we care not about time and we try to be considerate by not holding them up fueling our RV. Sometimes you have no choice and we have never had a trucker complain when we had to use the big truck pumps.. Oh.. agree about the next exit..great help in finding diesel and services but little help in determining if you will fit.

I use our GPS. I can locate truck stops and if I can't get in and need fuel that bad, I think I'd unhook the 5er, although I've never had to do that.

I wouldn't be too concerned about getting into or out of a fuel station. Its pretty rare that I come across a station that I can't use.
After you tow for awhile you get to know exactly where you can get your rig and where you can't. I can usually tell in a couple seconds if I can get into the station.
