I know I have to pay CA sales tax (ouch) but do I also have to pay the sales tax in the state I'm buying the rig? Seems unfair to be taxed twice on the same sale and rig.

Typically you pay tax in the state where you buy it and your state collects the difference if your home tax is higher. CA, however, is somewhat odd in the way th treats a number of taxes. If you call your motor vehicle bureau you should (repeat SHOULD) get a straight answer. They're the ones who'll be looking at tax when you try to register it.

I don't think so. We've bought a motorhome in Florida and in Iowa, and a couple of automobiles in Maryland and Pennsylvania, and we were never charged a penny sales tax IN THOSE STATES, but had to pay the Delaware tax when we went in to get it registered.

Not sure about where you are but in Tennessee no. I went to Alabama and purchased my new Sea Breeze. The dealer gave me all the original
mfg documents which I turned in to my county clerk here in TN. Wouldn't have to do that but there is a lien since I financed. I'll get them back in a few years.
In TN it's not really called sales tax, but, useage tax. But if it walks like a duck............
Anyway, I've heard it's that way in most states. The selling dealer will know. Mine offered to charge the TN useage tax on the financing end but I opted not to finance that extra money but paid out of pocket.
Good luck

You will pay a road use tax in the State you register the RV in.
The rate will vary per State and I understand some States have no tax.
When I was in the RV business all units I sold to out of state buyers got a thirty day tag to use until they got back to where they would register the unit.

You should be able to get a temporary registration or a transportation permit in the state you buy in. That is valid only in that state but you are not likely to get bothered by the law if you use it to drive home and then register in your home state. When we bought our last motorhome in Arizona we drove it in Idaho, Washington and Oregon on the Arizona temporary registration before getting back to California. If you want to be completely legal you can stop at a DMV office in each state you pass through and get their temporary tag.

A lot of people are answering the question based on what their past experience has been. State legislators have been very active in this tax area lately and a lot of changes have been made. Ohio, for example, where the question used to be very simple is now more complex. I deal in this tax area daily and I would highly suggest anyone go to the tax authority in both the state of residence and the state of potential purchase before making the decision.
