My longest round trip is right at 800 miles this year... and 2 of them..
then mostly within 200 for several others.
I enjoy staying in a nice motel and eating out... But this RV thing is about exploring and adventure. so the extra few hundred bucks is alright..
I can get right at 12 or 13 mpg if I take it easy.. I am sure my mpg would drop if I got up in the 27ft range.. guess I will keep my smaller one for a few more years and see how things shake out.

It's not really too much of an issue for me. I like places that are off the beaten path, so RVing is the only way for me to go. If there is a hotel nearby that is as comfortable as my TT, I'm probably not where I really want to be. It would only be blocking my view of the scenery.

Philly to the Keys for four to out timeshare for two weeks. Priced out flying into FT Lauderdale and renting a car for two weeks, buying food and boading the dog. Wow! Tried flying directly into Key West no car, food and boading the dog. WOW! Tried driving the RV 3000 mile round trip about $1,500. at $4.00 per gal at 8 mpg. I always estimate high so I feel good when I get home. We get about 10 mpg on the trip down there. Add $ for mis expenses. Take the bikes, fishing rods, snokling equipment, loungers, storage for rv. We will save about $800.00 if we drive the rv. I kept going over the numbers. The realistic numbers on what we would actually do and lets face it the food and the rental car are the most expensive items in the trip, especially when you have to empty the fridge at home only to buy all of the food at the resort for two weeks if you fly. I mean all of the staple kill you. Can I scale it back a cut corners. Yes and No because my wife loves the trip down. We visit out family in FL. Sleep in our own bed and see sights that we would never see if we were to fly down. The bottom line is, as others have said, vacations are expensive. When we take the RV we can get the extras that make the vacation special because we can go at our own pace and enjoy each other. When the price gap is close we take the RV. When the cost is lower that is a no-brainer.

DW and I just got back from our first trip with the new-to-us TV. I averaged 15.27 MPG with 2/3 towing and 1/3 not towing. We were towing with a Nissan Pathfinder last yr and got 8 mpg or less. Overall, even with the price of diesel, I'm doing better on fuel costs with the truck then I was last yr.
We are planning a couple of 500+ mile trips this yr and are just hoping the price of diesel drops with the lower demand for heating oil.

Spent a little over $800 in gas for the trip. It was enough for the DW and I to discuss where the break away point for trailer trips is? Could we have paid less if we went on a flight, rented a car and gotten an inexpensive room in the Disney complex? I'd hate to see my enjoyment of taking my home with me negated by sky high gas prices, but there it is.
How is everyone else dealing with this? I didn't see nearly as many RV's on the road this trip as I normally do, so I know it's hitting our community hard.
Remember in the late 90's when the gas was .89 per gallon? Now I sound like my mother.
What kind of tires on the trailer ... make and size.

like to know what kind of motels you all are staying in. I went to the RV museum a few months back, stayed at a no frills, chain type motel-booked on-line with price whatever and still paid $115. of course noterdame was playing that week end and may have had an affect, but 1 nite there was 5 nites at the local St park-with change back
I'll take my TT any day. we do alot of week ends and luckily we have 2 St parks with in 40 min and another 1hr 20 min away, and long trip(2 weeks) only bout 320 mi away. still go, just not as far and will cook at the CG alot more instead of running out all the time. cutting a few corners and saving here and there is worth it. compromise is the name of the game

Based on what you posted if gas was $2.50 per gal it would have cost you $170 less for the trip. Is $170 really worth not RVing? IMO I look at what the increase is over last year not what the total cost was for this year.

I don't have time to go 50 - 55mph. I work full time for an airline. We get free air travel and we still prefer to take the trailer. We don't have the time to screw around. We want to get where we are going and make the most of the time there. The cost of fuel is our biggest expense. We take all of our own food and never eat out. We enjoy each other and our kids that way.

Well, the price of everything is going up. I've noticed at the local diner, which has really good food for really good prices, has been creeping up in price this year. Heck, prices in the grocery stores have been jumping up. Prices for hotel rooms, and airlines tickets (planes need fuel!), will go up as well.
We are towing to Disney World from Connecticut this fall. I keep re-working the numbers, but so far we are still going to save substantially by towing our TT to Fort Wilderness. And I have "officially" given up on re-figuring the costs... we are going, and I am going to enjoy myself!
We are not cutting back on our other trips this summer. Most are within 50 miles, so it is costing an extra $10.00 in fuel over last year (figuring very roughly). Speaking of that... if you haven't already, take a look at campgrounds that are nearby. There is no need to always travel half a day to get to a good campground.
