I've got a day/night shade with a broken string. I've got a spool of string, the stringing needle, the stringing diagram and the Winnebago instructions. I just can't figure out how to remove the shade. There is a screw at each end and a clip in the middle. I've been unable to get it out of the clip.

Anyone know how to do that (with the valence in place)?

Does the valence have to come off? It would probably be easier with it off. But I can't figure out how to get it off. I can see and get to the screws attaching the bottom to a bracket but I can't find how the top is held in place. There isn't any give in the valence with the bottom screws out.

In the meantime a wood working spring clamp holds it up but my wife's hands aren't strong enough to squeeze it. It also dents the valence so I have to move it around.

My neighbor had to replace almost all of the strings in the Day/Night shades on his 5th wheel. Dirty Blind Man is the web site he used and he had no problems. Good luck! I think if someone got good at this they could make a living traveling around RV parks.

The way Winnebago mounts the blinds, the valence doesn't have to come off. You found the two screws and the clip. With the screws out, you should be able to pull the shade out of the clip by rotating the bottom toward the inside (if the clip was mounted the same direction mine was). I may have helped spread the clip with a screwdriver, don't remember exactly, did this a while ago.

I just restrung micro-mini-blinds at home and I would think it could work the same on the day/night shades in a motorhome.

This sounds a bit crazy but it does work on micro-mini blinds.

Find the end of the old string, and melt the new string tip-to-tip to the old string with a match or lighter. Be sure the two melt together evenly without over-lap. Use your thumb and index finder to twirl the string to form it uniformly without sharp edges. Then slowly pull the old string out, which automatically feeds the new string in. When the new string comes out, it's all strung. Retie, and it's done.

I think the string melts together because there is enough Rayon or plastic within the make-up of the string.

I think I tried that but I probably didn't use enough muscle, being afraid of damaging something. I'll try it again.

It is way too late for something like that. I have no idea where it broke and most of the string is on the floor from raising & lowering it. We just returned last Saturday after two weeks in a local membership campground and it broke prior to that. 14+ ups & downs has done a good job pulling the string out.

My day-nights used two strings, each doubled to make a pair (four strings total), tension balanced through a spring. Where each string went to the spring, it was knotted.

While restringing, I had to fasten the spring down (with tape) so that it stayed centered until tension was balanced again. This is in the restringing instructions.

If you were real careful trying to pull a new string with the old, you might be able to pull one at a time, without dislocating the balancing spring. But I'm not so sure how you would pull through the knot, where each string fastens to the spring.

My third cord broke today! I guess it is time to get some replacement kits. Man this stinks.

Does anyone know, can you buy a 4 cord kit instead of two 2 cord kits?

Hey Rodney- We got our cord at Joanne's Fabric store. There was enough to restring the four cords in one blind. We used the diagrams on the forum. It takes about an hour to restring a blind. Helps if two people are doing it. We totally restrung all the blinds. If one breaks, more are sure to follow. Make sure the guide grommets are on the right side and no sharp metal burrs and in the way.
Where are you now?
