It looks like our new rig will have the wheelchair mods done in time for our trip to Tunica, MS, later this month!!!
We'll be heading out I-40 from the Los Angeles area, and have already pulled our itinerary/campground list from the GoodSam trip building tool along with a list of their campground affiliates, anybody have any suggestions on which ones are good and not so good?
Any suggestions on areas to avoid? Also now having a DP-the old rig was gas-what're the best Diesel filling stations to use for price/access?

kjames, just did ( almost ) the same trip last week. I left from Hanford Ca. Over the 58 to the 40. Found the cheapest gas at exit 9 in AZ. Almost 30 cents cheaper than anywhere. Not sure on the diesel.
1st night 533 miles to Williams AZ. The Grand Canyon Railroad RV Park is new, very clean and was only $35.00.
2nd night 532 miles to Tucamcari. Theres a KOA there that was nice. I think It was around $25.oo. If you don't feel like cooking, they will make you a meal and deliver it to your site. Good food and reasonable.
3rd night. 560 miles. Fort Smith. Cross the Arkansa boarder in Alma, theres a KOA there that was nice.
The only issue I had was the wind in Texas and Oklahoma. A week later my shoulders and arms still ache. Also watch for delayed traffic. 3 different days the freeway was blocked because of accidents.
Can't help you much in Miss. I went thru to Tenn down the 78.

I see that you put on 533, 532 and 560 miles daily--what was your elapsed driving time/speed? What type of rig did you have? I'm planning on taking a week to go back so we can stop and see some of the country, and eat on a regular basis, but my partner is the wheelchair user so getting him ready to go each day takes some time, then there's the rig...
I have a 34 ft A. Gasser. Seems like no matter how fast I drive, I average 50 mph. I was driving 11 or so hours a day. You might be interested in the train ride to see the Grand Canyon. That RV Park is right at the station.
A lot of the drive on the 40 is miles and miles of miles.
GaryDuarte, thanks for the links to the KOAs...was going to be checking them as well as GS parks from their itinerary, as I have a KOA card to use for their discounted rates. I'll have to pass on the GC RR though, we're on the way to Tunica for Grand Opening of Paula Deen's restaurant at the Grand Casino & Hotel, and I'm not going to break my neck trying to do 11 hours a day, either.
I will say this have stopped at all of those except the ft smith KOA plan I that as a weekender this year all the recommended ones are ok have hit the Tucummarie several times and Gary was right on I will say do not stop at the flagstaff KOA very difficult to move around in as far as 550 mile days try the first couple at 400 and then see if you will feel up to 500 mile days. I used to drive mcalester ok to Bakersfield in a day and a half stopping at Williams. first time I tried it in the class a had to give up after about 9 hrs one of the things you have to watch for from Bakersfield to okla city is the winds. tehy will wear you aout and down saw on tip a 5er in Amarillo a few years back

We have traveled the 40 quite a few times these are some of the places we stop overnight. The one problem you may see about this is we don't travel far at all. We take our time and enjoy. Mississippi - Sam's Town Tunica - a little off the 40 but the best buffet and RV park Arkansas - North Little Rock KOA - or a little farther in Conway we love Toad Suck COE, about 7 miles off the 40 but you can sit and watch the barges down the river. Camp right on the river water and electric, no sewer but they have a dump. Oklahoma - Sallisaw Koa or at exit 178 Firelake Casino. Then we go to Council Road RV Park on the west side of Oklahoma City, very nice with large pull-thrus. Texas panhandle - we stay in Shamrock at the West 40 RV park. Quite park with nice long pull-thrus. We don't like to un-hook for one night. New Mexico - Tucumcari, Mountain Rd Rv Park - right off the 40 and good place to get gas or diesel. Then, one of our favorites and we always stay a few days is Albuquerque - We like the Enchanted Trails (C2C and PA) Here you can walk Old Town go up to Sandia Peak (wonderful) or gamble at the casinos. We always have a great time in Albuquerque. Arizona - Holbrook at the A-OK RV Park. Large pull-thrus, cable full-hook-ups and take a nice drive to Petrified Forest and Painted Desert -beautiful. You can also stop at Meteor crater for a break - very interesting. There is also Canyon Gateway on the 40 right befor you go p to Grand Canyon. We have stayed at the Trailer Village in the Grand Canyon and loved it. Big enough for us 40' with 4 slides. Not all sites are real level but you can manage. Take the shuttle around. Beautiful... I would suggest if you haven't already is to get Passport America. You save 50% at selected campgrounds for $44.00 per year. Any questions....Just ask.... Have fun, Janet

Well...it seems we have enough feedback for now....I've got to sit with partner and figure driving time and stops...
We're not really stopping to sightsee on the way....we're going to Tunica, MS, for Paula Deen's Grand Opening. Have to get back, too, as Rob is due in a Masters' level course at California State University Long Beach on the 2nd. We'll be able to cover slightly more ground going west than east, but it still works about the same timewise.
