I did several searches but evidently not asking the right question...so posting here hoping for an answer.

We will be heading out for AK on the 20th (two weeks) and will be spending at least a month traveling through Canada and was wondering how does the person who is forwarding our mail address it to certain places in Canada? Are zip codes used? Do they have "general delivery"? Should we just wait until we get to Tok and have it forwarded there?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Ron

They have those goofy postal codes with a combination of letters and numbers.

I did a google search for Canada postal service, found the site, then a subsequent search for general delivery.

On a related note, I would suggest doing business by computer and auto-pay, not paper mail. Standard procedure for those on the move. Nothing more frustrating than waiting and waiting for important mail in the US, let alone a foreign country.

All I can say is that some folks who are full-timers and depend upon cheques for meds had their mail forwarded to me, but their mail collector did not allow enough time for it to get to this island.

I got one batch of mail in time to send them on their way, not on the day they had planned. & they had told their usual recipient of mail to send earlier, and said party hadn't. Allow time, allow time, allow time. I don't know how you can get that message across. It doesn't apply everywhere, but certainly some places, yes.

& I, I took the road less travelled by.

Goofy? our Postal Codes are goofy?...what, you have trouble with letters?

But I would think the very best thing would be to have your mail forwarded to Tok. That way, you are not looking for something that might still be at the border or whatever. Takes the worry out of it. KISS Keep It Simple, Stupid.

When we travelled through Canada on the way to Alaska, we just had our mail held and then forwarded to Tok General Delivery.

It only took 2 days for Priority Mail from Texas to Tok.

On other trips to Canada, we've had our mail sent to us in care of the place we were staying rather than to a Post Office. We used the reduced price 3-day FedEx service which worked well.

However, be advised that some mail (like prescription drugs) won't be allowed at all, and if you are receiving something that has to be processed in customs (like an RV part - I guess anything except just paper mail), the delay may be a couple of weeks or more in transit.

Thanks to all....

Yes, we will be using email and wifi for 99.9% of our transactions (mainly bill paying). However, just in case something needs my personal attention (signature or something), I wanted to know the correct procedure. It sounds like either general delivery or at the rv park we will be staying in would best. However, since we are "winging" it, the rv parks won't be know until a day or so ahead. I think I'll just keep my fingers crossed and hope everything can wait until we get to Tok.

Gary, yeah sometimes letters and numbers together get folks down here a little confused.... just kidding Chris.

Thanks again

At least, each year, Canadians have a simple address to which they can send their wish lists:

Forwarded to TOK is the best idea. Postage from US to a Canadian address is pretty highC- as is generl postage rates wthin Canada.
